Don't know if any of you guys read that; I merely got it because it came with a discount on used games for a year or so.
However, in the latest edition, while reviewing World In Conflict, the reviewer (forgot his name already) mentioned briefly that it was [paraphrased] 'very similar to the great Myth series of a decade ago'.
Now, as to how we use that: Somewhere in the way back of the magazine Game Informer re-reviews old games in a paragraph or two.
All we need to do is get someone to contact that reviewer and get them to review M2 again and hopefully mention that there is still an active community around.
For that to work, I'd have to suggest either the whole community finally switch over to Marius or Blades finally revives Playmyth or shuts it down for good.
Now as to shifting players over to this server, we could have a couple tournaments going on exclusively at Marius.
I know Paris In Flames is planning on running one, and if I can get a loathing guy/web page maker to help, I could run my own.

Its common sense that for the community to have any hope of continued survival, it needs to move to mnet.
Even if playmyth was functional, its never supported guest logins for demo users - thus creating a catch 22 situation re new players. They could join mnet, but there's no-one there & hence they leave ... or they could jump through the hoops of registering with playmyth, but why would they do that when they haven't had the chance to check out what multiplayer's like first? God knows how many n00bs have been lost over the last 5/6 years because of this.
Now of course its doubly worse, as returning players who've forgotten their password are shut out too. If the community sticks with a server that shuts ppl out, well ain't it bleeding obvious what'll happen?
Tourneys are a very good way of getting ppl to move. The golden opportunity was the MWC, as having a huge group of ppl moving to mnet during those months would have been the catalyst for everyone else moving. And once there, they wouldn't go back. Didn't happen of course :\ But if there's some tourneys that get a decent signup of players & held on mnet, it could make the difference. You just need enough players across to get it to a tipping point.
Once on mnet, PR efforts could be made in the knowledge that new players actually _are_ likely to see others online & games hosted.

We agree then, Iron.
I forget most of the arguments, but I gather that the move to Marius for MWC didn't happen because 'all returning players would have no idea that the move had occurred'.
I can see that being a logical argument at the time, but as Myth is in the fall season and declining in numbers thanks to school, this would be the perfect time to switch over. Especially while the MWC07 site isn't completely abandoned; since that's probably the most communication the ranked crowd gets.
I'd suggest Project Magma or Marius' benefactors host\sponsor a huge tournament as sort a 'meet in the middle' step towards re-uniting the community under one server in addition to other third-party tournaments.
I think Mythers would switch once they have a real reason to.

Man, the ignorance and lethargy that kept that from happening burns me. So many slobs in the MWC forum were against that, and putting people down for suggesting it. Yet it's an obvious move. And it was an obvious failure not to move. God damn, I hate ignorance when it interferes with my life -- and Myth is life! It was just plain destructive to our game not to move.iron wrote:If the community sticks with a server that shuts ppl out, well ain't it bleeding obvious what'll happen?

I'd like to just bite the faces off of some of those ignoramuses who kept it from happening. It would have been easy, and it would have been such a positive thing for our game. But no. Nope. Nuh, uh. Zip, nada. Ignorance and laziness, obstinateness and vindictiveness kept it from happening and has affected all of us who still love to play, and all those who might have joined and shared in our love of the game.
There's a forum thread at MWC right now about the Fall Classic tournament. l Several people posted that they'd only play if it were held on Mariusnet. I posted the same.
How about this: whether you intend to play or not, you go post in the thread that you'd only play if it were on Mariusnet. ( http://www.mythgaming.net/mwc2007/forum ... php?t=1804 )

Yeah right now there is no active community. Just 10 or so ww2 players who logon playmyth everyday and a similar number who logon playmyth or marius exclusively at different times.
I've logged on the last few days and not played a single game because there's literally no-one on, or just 1 demo player (I quickly get tired of playing gimble 5 times).
Part of the problem is that there's no real active euro's left aside from a few in IX and myself. The only others who are on are a few mental players and OoH and they play at like 4am
I'd also like to say that the argument that old players used to playmyth wouldn't find marius is BS. Often people come back because people they used to play with tell them/force them to. Ok its possible that some people might be 'lost' with a switch, but then those people are too lazy to try

That always seemed like one of the most bogus arguments, unless the majority of returning Myth players only get their Myth news through word of mouth on the playmyth game server.Slinx wrote:We agree then, Iron.

Lots of Myth stuff at http://mythgraveyard.org.
Sometimes I put hard to find stuff in my my Udogs folder.

Either word of mouth or through that damn blue bar. Hell, we could've had a bigger Valor tournament if Playmyth had bothered to put up a message about it. So I guess if you can get Blades to change that message telling people to switch to Marius (assuming he's done with hosting the server) then that'd force a change. That always seemed like one of the most bogus arguments, unless the majority of returning Myth players only get their Myth news through word of mouth on the playmyth game server.
And back to the original thing, maybe if we can just do like one huge Marius night and get that Game Informer reviewer to play, that'd work.

I have a feeling you're probably right, however, there are reasons to keep PlayMyth running.iron wrote:Blades put up a message telling ppl to switch to marius? To him its a matter of pride - he'd rather have Myth die than see playmyth lose out to mnet.
In the spring of 2002 when PlayMyth came up, most of the Myth II crowd moved there - they were unhappy with MariusNet for one reason or another (no Myth II rank at the time, admins that enforced the rules, friction between the TFL and Myth II crowd, etc). Now some people figured that MariusNet 'lost' there, but to be honest, as the person mostly running MariusNet - I was glad to see the headaches go. At that time, there was no reason to close down MariusNet, because TFL still had quite a following. Over time, with the updates in Myth II for the vTFL stuff, and PlayMyth supporting TFL, it got to be less and less of a reason to keep MariusNet running. But a few people still used it, and were quite vocal about wanting it kept up. I won't deny it - I disagreed with a lot of the things that Blades/PlayMyth did -saving chat logs and banning people for offensive remarks? a little too big brother for my tastes, among other things (right Iron? heh). I wasted more time than I care to discuss trying to sort out various issues that would have not been there had it not been for Blades. I (and Marius) more or less 'retired' - PPE took over the day to day running of MariusNet, what there was of it. Then Marathon people started using it. We lost the web server because a hard drive melt down, and the game server was moved a few times too - but still a few people were using it.
When PlayMyth went down for a while, MariusNet was up and people had a place to play. The community continues to shrink for various reasons, we're talking about a 10 year old game now... most people have moved on. 5 years ago I was playing Myth almost daily - now I've not played on MariusNet for probably a year, stuff happens.
The way MariusNet is ran now could not have been done when we first started. With the 100s of active TFL and Myth II users online, there was a lot more friction than there is now. Admins were necessary, banning people was necessary, guest login could not have been active at that time - people may disagree with some of those statements, but trust me, if you saw the things I did when the Bungie Myth II server was closed, you would agree. With the smaller crowd, it's easy enough to .mute and .wank the bad apples that are sure to still be around, people can admin themselves easy enough on MariusNet - and I'm sure PPE will handle anything *really* bad that comes up. When PlayMyth was down, I got pinged by the Marathon people about the 'harassment' they were getting from the Myth people - Marius had to come out of retirement to tweak some of the server code to give the Marathon people 'marathon only' rooms so that they could avoid the abuse (yes, I'm sure it was only a few bad apples... but that's all it takes to make people uncomfortable).
So though it might be nice for the remaining people to move from PlayMyth to MariusNet, I don't think PlayMyth should shut down. The MariusNet name is currently bought and paid for until November of 09, and I don't see me not renewing it. The web server and game server are paid for by PPE, I personally don't know how much it costs him to run things, but one day he might see the need to spend his money elsewhere. If that day comes, it would be best if there is an option for the players, otherwise, the smaller Myth community would have no where to go.

It's fairly easy to set up another backup server should PlayMyth.net close, and have the Myth II 1.7 patch add an entry to enable connections to it.
PlayMyth.net doesn't allow new or guest connections and is unmaintained, so it'd be better for it to close than continue as it is now.

Headaches? Remember the Cops guy posting goatse pics linked to from the forums? That guy who figured out how to read chat whispers and the one who kept crashing games?
