looking for challenging solo maps

Post by adrenaline »

Figured this would be the right crowd to ask...

I am looking for some solo/coop plugins that will push my micro abilities to the limits...

A few criteria:

- A realistic amount of units... i.e. a unit set similar to what you'd get in a typical FFA game
- no special/unique units... stock bungie units only please!
- not just waves of thrall...

The only one I've tried so far that fits the bill is Imprisoned, by Gugusm =IX=. Morte Della Luna is pretty good too, but... waves of thrall and having a warlock hero kind of ruin it for me.

Has anyone ever scripted a somewhat realistic plugin that simulates playing 1v1 against a real opponent?

Try Nightfall or Phantom Hounds. I remember Nightfall being pretty difficult. I don't think there are any special units. I have them on my YT channel if you want to skim through to see what they are.

Solo is 90% different than multi.

Solo is mostly about duffs and zerk with a little arc micro and taking no casualties against mostly mindless waves (even on legendary). Solo maps are also very linear and you usually look for a place to camp and then draw out the enemy to your trap.

Multi is mostly about trow, fetch, jman, souls, ghol, and large melee micro with lots of TRADING casualties.

You're better off just playing a lot of multi against good people, and if they suck then using less units by leaving them at the starting point or being on a team with less less units.

I'm afraid you've missed the point entirely. I'm looking for a challenge to kill time when there are no other players online... which is almost always these days. I definitely do not need a primer on multiplayer haha... but perhaps you don't know me, so I'll forgive your ignorance ;)

From the sands of time...

There were various M2 releases of the TFL map "Across the Gjol". You might try "Across the Gjol vIII" by The Wolf3, from 10 January 2004. The map features randomized waves. Always good.

•

There was an obscure release called "Gonen's Ridge" back in the days (December 1999). Basically Gonen's Bridge, modified so much as to be unrecognizable. The units were all vanilla Bungie, if I recall. Insane challenge. Sadly, it's not in the archives.

•

"Lugas - The Abomination" was kinda fun.

•

"Sir Mauriac's Tale" was already mentioned, but that's TFL only, unless something's changed in the last few years. Definitely one of the best 3rd party solos for the Myth series, ever.

•

There's "Mud River Market Defence"---again by The Wolf3---based on one of the coolest colormaps of all, "Mud River Market" (by Amos & Angus of the Creation group). Same map was used for a Wild West scenario, FYI.

•

"Muirthemne Penitentiary" is a great one, by Snakebelly of Muirthemne Militia. A definite fav.

•

You might also try "Path of the Damned".

•

"Senex Silvae" is pretty great, but different. You start with a single unit.

•

For somewhat silly but interesting challenge, try "Shade". The maps are kinda crude, but gameplay is good.

•

The plugin "Sosua Beach" was a goodie, but I don't see it here. Was made by Chuck Sievert (aka Webscreamer; aka iScream) and Harlan Lewis (aka Blambi), back in July 2001.

•

Both versions of "The Fall of Naugrimin" are pretty insane.

•

"The Great Journey"---by DarthRevan555---is a semi-classic. A bit redundant here and there, but definitely a keeper.

•

"Throne of the Lich King". At times a pain, but overall a very decent solo.

•

"Aztec Oranges" is so very cool, but also so preposterously hard to the point of being well beyond annoying. A shame, really. However, if you are indeed crazy, and love micromanaging your micromanagement, it might be for you. On the other hand, I don't see it here, so...

•

Check out "Brave the Ghenjiwash" by the fabulous GimpMask. Definitely a tough one.

http://tain.totalcodex.net/items/show/b ... ghenjiwash

•

Though it does have a few modified units, "Attack on the Great Hall" is a lovely challenge, indeed. No idea who made it.

•

There are of course many more maps and plugins out there. Just a few off the top of my head, this lazy day.

Cheers.

Reviving this slightly but I also might make a separate post for visibility. Has anyone tried to make a machine learning AI opponent for Myth? Or has anyone thought more deeply about the AI opponents for Myth in general? I'm curious and could use a project to help distract me from research stress.

Cheers,

Myth map actions/scripts are far too limited for anything like that. So it would entail a huge update to myth to make either a new scripting system or an api to get access to more machine friendly input/output. I'm pretty sure training an ai to play myth the way a human would (with camera movement, clicking on the screen, etc.) is cutting edge research level or beyond.

Fair enough. I was pretty sure that scripting an opponent wouldn’t work but I think training an AI to play myth might produce slightly better results. I suppose i might be a little deep into academia when cutting edge projects sound like fun breaks from my regular research..
