Rendering Original Myth II Units in Alias Studio 12
This two-part video tutorial demonstrates how to open, repair, and render original Myth II unit 3D project files using Alias Studio 12.
Intended for Myth II artists, modders, mapmakers, and preservationists, the tutorial works with the original Alias .wire scenes and Myth II StudioTools asset directories. These legacy scenes can often load with their geometry, rigging, cameras, and animation intact while still failing to render correctly because their texture and image references point to directory paths from the original development environment.
Using original Myth II unit animation scenes such as M2Thrall_Attack, MyrRun, and BigMdeath, the videos demonstrate the practical process of getting these old assets working again.
The tutorial shows how to navigate the StudioTools/user_data project structure, locate unit project and animation files, open legacy .wire scenes, inspect models and animation in multiple viewports, and perform test renders.
A major focus is repairing broken texture references. The videos demonstrate how to use Alias Studio’s File Reference List to identify missing external image files, recognize old Unix-style development paths such as /usr/people/.../user_data/.../pix/..., and use Replace Path to reconnect those references to the corresponding local Myth II texture and .color files.
The tutorial also covers manually locating individual image maps, resolving scenes that use multiple body-part textures, adjusting Render Globals, setting animation and time-slider ranges, configuring quality and output options, and previewing the final textured model to confirm that the recovered scene can render correctly again.
The main purpose of this tutorial is to help explain why an original Myth II 3D scene may open successfully but still fail to render properly, and how to restore the connection between the old Alias scene and its external texture resources.
It also provides a historical look at the original Myth II 3D asset workflow, including complete animated unit scenes, wireframe construction, texture references, and rendering setup.
Recorded on a Windows XP-era system using Alias Studio 12. Although the software and operating environment are now old, the workflow remains useful for anyone interested in studying, preserving, recovering, or rendering original Myth II 3D unit assets.
