Zombie mod
Zombie mod
Hey all,
I'm working on a plugin for Myth 2 in the style of those online flash games where you have one or two troopers against a hoard of flesh eating zombies. I figure I can just use the ghast collection for the zombies, but I was wondering if there are any good SWAT / police / soldier collections out there I could use for the player characters. I know about WW2 and Special Forces, but I'd prefer something more SWAT like. I know TMBM was working on a counterstike TC at one point. Does anyone here know if they got anywhere with that or if there's any possible collections floating around the net that I could use?
EDIT: Also, I'm surprised that I haven't seen a mod like this before...have I just missed it or has it really not been made? It seems like myth lends itself perfectly to this style of gameplay.
Also, if anyone here is a decent scripter with lots of time on their hands, I need some help scripting this and some other projects.

there was an old plugin called "Cages" that might have units that fit what you're after. I can't find the plugin anywhere now - pity as it was a lot of fun. Maybe someone has it and will upload to the Tain?
Anyway, two of the units from it have been extracted & can be downloaded here and here
There was also that ADT tagset TMBM made - didn't that have space marines fighting aliens or something?

'fraid I'm not too good at mapping or modelling (READ: Can't). I'm more of a FEARmonger / level designer.
Also, CAGES is the bomb diggity. I just beat it last month. You can find it and a bunch of other mods here:

But I'm looking more for police style units. That's why any vestiges of the counterstrike TC would be particularly useful. If I can't find anything like that, I think I'll use the special forces units instead.
By the way, I'm new to these forums. How do people feel about others using the units they've created for other projects? I don't want to step on anyone's toes.
Zeph, what are you planning for your zombie mod? I have some conceptual ideas I'd love to see implemented one way or another.

1) ALWAYS credit the original creator of the units, no matter if you have permission or not. Even if you don't want to bother having a readme file with your map, if you use someone else's content you should have a readme file containing credits to the original authors for the things in your map that you 'borrowed'. Giving credit shows that you aren't attempting to pass off someone else's creation as your own.rifthead wrote: By the way, I'm new to these forums. 2) Unless the person who created the units gave blanket permission for anyone to use his/her units for whatever they want, it's good form to at least attempt to contact the original author. You can either ask permission to use the units, or just let the author know you are going to be using them. Whether you *ask* or not is up to you, but don't *ask* if you aren't willing to follow the author's wishes, that would be rude. In any case, most unitmakers are probably going to be at least passably interested in seeing how their units are used so it's a courtesy to let them know. If you aren't going to ask the author, whether you tell the author at the start or the end of your project is your call.
If you are unable to contact the original author, I personally would say that since you made the attempt to contact the author, AND the author never said you couldn't reuse the units it's reasonable for you to use them as long as you give him/her credit.
opinion: Personally I think attempting to contact the author is enough even for those situations where the author has specifically said "Do not use this without my permission", but that is just my opinion. In those cases where an email address was no longer valid and the author had a "don't use this without my permission" clause, I would probably post a note on the forums here or mariusnet asking if anyone had any more recent contact info for the author, but if I was unable to contact an author I would consider re-use of the author's content in the context of a new or modified Myth map or plugin fair game.
Lots of Myth stuff at http://mythgraveyard.org.
Sometimes I put hard to find stuff in my my Udogs folder.

Also might want to look out for beta plugins, its not cool to steal their thunder before its released. Special forces is still being heavily worked on as SF2, it would probably be best to wait until it is released as final (or ask).
One handy trick to steal peoples beta units is to contact them and help them with feedback on their projects, then you will get a feel for what their visions are for their stuff and then you will be able to work with them to make sure you don't mess anything up.

yes , well if one is skulking around hl servers looking in people's personal folders and using beta content, one is on one's own. But is good advice.Fury IX wrote:Also might want to look out for beta plugins, its not cool to steal their thunder before its released. Just had a thought - how about using one of the units in the Manistee Paintball Challenge unitset/mod for your security guard / policeman / modern-non-military-person-with-a-gun? The paintball gun attack projectiles bitmaps would need to be re-done (probably could borrow some from Tomb Robber (laura craft shoots revolvers) or WWII, but the units themselves might be more what you are looking for and if not for the paint projectiles I am thinking most of the paintball guns at their tiny in-game size would pass for normal firearms.

Thanks for the paintball suggestion. I'll look into it. I think Zeph might have already done pretty much what I was hoping to see with Quarantine.
Also, for the SF units, I was under the impression that Take 2 made them for Green Beret's. I've seen them through the Carnage Islands release. Who's making SF2?

Well, as I understand it, they were originaly for Green Berets, but due to time restraints it never got the full justice it deserved. So it has remained in development thanks to Ozone who has put all the finishing touches to it and will release it as SF2 very soon.
I doubt there would be any problems with you using the units on a small project, but since the makers are still developing them and planning a grand new release, it might be better to speak to them first just to be safe. As a general rule of thumb, as long as you give credit, I wouldn't worry about it to much, but be prepared to obey the wishes of the great mapmakers and not discourage them, which may end up in some wasted effort on your part unless you do your homework first (as you are doing).
