New sprites / robots / continuous attacks

Post by rifthead »

Good to see the magma forums back online.

Does anyone know of a good tutorial for importing unit sprites into myth? I have a 3D model and amber, but this will be my first attempt, so any guidance would be appreciated.

On another note, does anyone know of any good floaty robots that would look like the sentinels from Halo? If all else, I think I'd use the automated defense drones from Marathon (SITH). In line with that, is there any way to do a continuous attack, like a beam weapon that constantly does damage as long as it's firing? The warlock's ring of fire comes to mind but is there any way to turn an attack like that into a beam?

again, go fire the particle beam weapon in Quarantine, I think you will understand how it works if you look at it in amber.

Mazzarin VI also has a beam weapon fired by Beholders

I don't think the Beholder beam is continuous, though.

You can find a couple of different floating drones in Jinn. They look nice, too.

Its pretty much impossible to create a continously firing beam weapon with a moving unit or a moving target. Now if it is set in one spot you might be able to work something out. Lightning would track the target well, but would be jagged and not beamlike. A beam weapon like the beholder in mazz is just a beam sprite that is the same as bullet or arrow, so even if you have a long beam sprite or mb using contrails that made the beam look longer it wouldn't follow the target exactly, but would jump a little, but might look ok. Your best bet would be using a small sprite that has a lot of contrails that makes it look like one solid line, that is guided and tracks the target, but I still don't think it would look like a line.

What if the unit would fire these really fast? And each "line" would, when fired be directed at the unit? This way, as the unit moves, so does the "one line" which is actually a bunch of lines fired at each unit of time... Wouldn't that work?
