oddly enough, uninstalling Micro Trend Mcmillin (a free antivirus program given to me with the computer) has fixed all my problems and i havent crashed yet

If you need an antivirus, I've found AVG works well (http://free.grisoft.com/). No doubt other people here can suggest alternatives.

Trent Micro's antivirus is called "PC-cilling" [sic]. Oh the irony.
