I think most of us feel like the reason for alphabetical is just plainly obvious and didn't really need covered in depth.

Is alphabetical sorting the default method with the sort by map # the option?

Nope.

I'm still confused about why anyone ever even wanted the maps to be sorted by the number of meshes in them. To me that's like a company sorting their list of employees by how many kids they have. I'm sure there was a good reason behind it (well, I hope there was) but I don't see it, so could someone enlighten me?

Then that needs to be changed back. The general consensus clearly shows people prefer the original way.
