Huge difference in population densities between Europe and USA. The demand to take a train anywhere in USA covers helluva lot more square miles.
If you want to compare apple to apples, try New York City and compare it to London. Then rail miles are comparable. Reason its done in Europe is it is relatively cost effective due to population density. Reason its not done here in the US on a truly national scale is that it is not cost effective. Amtrack has lost millions upon millions for decades.
Fusion power and electric cars-- problem solved in 20-30 years. Or wait for nano engineering to turn car bodies into power source via photosynthesis.
