fyi, the REASON that the 3D-Models were "easily" extracted from Halo2 is because the extractor was extracting models to the format that they were ORIGINALLY created in. (3DS I think?). Apparently the game resource file format for the models was close enough (or identical) to the original 3D app that it wasn't rocket science to extract them.

If anyone thinks this is simple to just "extract the models", just think how many 3D games you know of - now go look and see how many model/unit extractors you can find for those games.

Saying "all you need to do is to extract the models" is like saying "all you need to do to stay alive forever is keep breathing". Technically true, but on a practical level it's completely useless.

Yeah.
Most professional game developers are arseholes anyway. You can tell by the silly things they do to annoy me;
When I put a texture of my own face on the head model of the protagonist from "Mafia", I decided it would help to reshape his head a bit and make my face fit better.

But you know what? You can get at just about any model from the game except for the face ones. Something to do with the fact that they do so much lip synch.....

But I mean REALLY. Why do that!

actually, as a programmer who is not in the game industry but who follows it with some interest, my guess would be it's less to annoy you than it is probably something related to the game development company probably not creating their own facial-lip-syncing software from scratch - they most likely license a library of speech-recognition/facial-heads and pay to include it in their game - and the license probably doesn't allow any use/editing other than what's needed to play the game - so they can't give you easy access to the head/face models.

Just a guess of course. It is of course possible that they did it just to piss you off.

It's more than likely, haha. To be honest I'm still annoyed about it. My face doesn't *quite* fit Tommy Angelo's head...... :(

Seriously everyone just shut the hell up, and post whatever models you have.

If you have them, but say you can't release them, then just shutup too, because that's borderline taunting.

You either help out the community, or you don't.

Where is CIK anyway? Just ask him. I thought he came on here regularly.

Now I'm crabby. I need to find some milk and go to bed.

I belive CIK left all things myth related about a year ago...i talked with him a little after he "left?" magma and he seemed to want to be in control of all things myth related......then he retired or something.

Oh look, I honestly agree - this long after the fact, I think just about everything TFL and M2 related should be open fucking season... I don't see any harm with the models being freely available because I guarantee only 1 in 100 Mythers would have the ability to DO anything with them.

Having said that; if they're locked away and people don't want to let 'em go, then there ain't much we can do.

I can only say I'd be all for the models accidentally leaking. In the grand scheme of things, who's going to give a shit?

Sadly i think its more of a case of what i have heard from serveral mythers "blank person had whatever myth power animator models at some point, was a total dumbass and only had them copied to a hard drive and it crashed."

Its called permanent storage and its cheap. brunt CD's and DVD's have been cheap for years and years.

Google permanent storage and get back to us renwood. Tell me, how long do CD's and DVD's last? How bout HDs?

I'm just sayin…

Past is past, nothing we can do about it. The most logical route from here is to have aspiring young 3d modelers (yay) remake stuff! Or make cid learn how to do it.

Give me a bit more time and i'll show you what i have been working on.

You really aren't in a position to bandy that 'dumbass' word around; and I don't mean that as a slur on your intelligence. I'm sure you're very bright, behind the scenes; but the people you're aiming it at....

MAN! Haha.

NO william, ive just heard about 1000 stories from various myth people that they lost shit because it was ONLY stored on hard drives.

I figured out HD only storage was a lame idea about 8 years ago, and your going to dout my statement about others being lame for not knowing this as well in 2008?

put more thought into things before responding.... thanks

It isn't that people think hard drive-only storage is a great idea. Its people either waiting until much later to do a non HD-only backup or just don't think they really need it. CD/DVDs don't last forever either. A single scratch and that could be the scratch that ruins that CD/DVD. So it isn't fair to assume that others don't know that HDs eventually die.

I don't need to. It'd be like taking a F-18 to a knife fight...

Have you ever heard the phrase "shit happens" ? There is absolutely no form of digital storage that can circumvent the awesome power of shit happening. I used to sing the praises of burnt media all the time, but the truth is it's really not all that permanent at all.

Just to add more useless bollocks to this thread (sorry Fortified Hooligan; really like what your doing) I found out I live in the same state as William, at first I liked that but there is something about him that deeply offends my soul.
