I'm trying to make a simple artifact tag using a Perfect Ruby from Diablo 2. I've got a screenshot and cropped it down etc.
Amber won't accept the screenshot of the Ruby

Ah, Myth works in quite specific images.
In Photoshop (or another similar program, you don't need anything ubër complex for this) you need to first make sure the image's background is all one colour (ie the ruby itself will be red but all the space around it blue or something).
Now you want to index the image, now Myth requires the first three of these colours to be specific; In Photoshop you can achieve this by simply adding them to the image. So, in the top left hand corner simply select the first three pixels (that is, one row of 3 pixels right in the top left hand corner), leave the first one as it is (it should be background colour unless your ruby is a funny shape) then place a bright, unused colour next to it, and another bright unused colour next to that.
With those 3 pixels still selected, go to the Image menu and choose Image >> Mode >> Indexed Colour; in the drop-down menu choose "Selective" and enter 256 colours for now. The first 3 colours of this should be the 3 you highlighted, so just click OK to index your image.
Now you can save it, go to File >> Save As and choose "Bitmap" as the type, and select the 8-bit option (it should be the only one available but it sometimes gives 4-bit as a choice).
It should now (hopefully) import without a problem!

Something is wrong.
It shows up in Fear, it allows me to create a projectile and artifact!
BUT: It won't show up in Loathing!
What is going on??!?!?!?
*starts chocking on his own white blood cells*
*faints*

I assume you know how to add projectiles to the Loathing projectiles menu? If you've managed to tackle Amber reasonably well then I suspect you're fairly well versed =)
Next thing to try, in Amber open the Collection menu and choose "Collection Info", this allows you to specify what your collection can be used for (if you want you can just tick all of these for flexibility, it's just an odd way to organise collections more neatly I suppose).

haravikk, i've solved the "artifact tag" in Fear Projectiles problem. I think it didn't work because of a currupt file (?). Anyway, its finished after minutes and minutes of concentrated thinking. It still has a bit of white, but I don't mind. It's all one sequence so the same appears in the Status Bar. Another topic dedicated to my complaining about my own lack of competence!

Could I do the same thing with Sapphires, Topazzes/Opals etc and other gems/skulls from Diablo 2? Maybe I should copy and paste this page onto a text file so I know what to do...

Well it's basically just the same process if you can get a hold of the images for them. If you want to combine them all into a single collection though then you'll need to create a colour table that allows them all to go in (ie they must all use the same 256 colours).
Easiest way to do that is to put all the images into one big image file and flatten it down (it does that when you choose Indexed Colour anyway), just make sure to follow the same steps I mentioned earlier for this large file, taking care to ensure that all images have the same background colour.
Now you can output the colour table by going into Image >> Mode >> Colour Table and choosing Save, put it somewhere you can find it again. Now, open each individual image, and when you choose Indexed Colour, select "Custom" from the drop-down and locate your saved colour table file, this will make it importable into Amber, resave as a bitmap and it's good to go.
Do the same for all images (including the already imported Ruby, if all you have handy is the bitmap then change it's mode to RGB then back to indexed colour to re-index it), then just add/replace them into Amber to your heart's content.
Removing the white edges will require some alpha channel work, which I don't have time to go into now, alternatively you can just try fiddling with the white bits in Photoshop and re-importing till you're happy with them.
Alpha channels let you do neat things like make the rubies etc slightly see-through, and fade the edges so they aren't as noticeable.
I don't know what the Diablo images are like though, out of curiosity, is the background colour white? If so then what you can do is go to Image >> Mode >> Colour Table and change the first colour (your background colour) to something else, like bright blue, this replaces that colour in your image with bright blue. It's handy to see if you're going to end up with 'holes' in your image (e.g if it's used the background colour within the ruby itself) and lets you see if you're going to get fuzzy edges.

I have another issue, this time with Loathing. When I put my Ruby into Loathing, it's a long black rectangle with lots of red in it. Weird!
Also: It appears to be fine in Myth 2 when I'm playing.

I've (finally) solved the problem with white edges an the scary issue with loathing above. I used a picture of a perfect ruby from the website. It looks so cute!!!!
Diablo 2 Webiste for those interested!
Also it just happened to be 8-bit, so I change the extention to .bmp and voila!
