GLEST: 3D open source RTS with Myth 3 units

Just thought I'd post this for anyone who was interested.
Glest is a fully 3D open sourced RTS written in C++.
It uses xml files for creating units, has simple AI and has editors and utilities for map making.
They also appear to have imported some M3 units for fun.

Imagine a myth future that is open sourced and free to download - sounds too good to be true, no?
At least I thought it would be worth checking out...

A clone of Myth III's solo-player, with resource-gathering and technology levels.
But seriously, it seems nobody there has heard of Myth except the graphics artist with the berserk model.

LoL that screesnshot is horrible.
Here is one I just took:
It's not exactly the greatest game, but it's not bad at all for an opensource free project.
You actually got to try it out - perhaps a myth-like mod wouldn't too hard?

Glest lacks any multiplayer though.
What'd be much more interesting would be forking & extending the game itself to be myth-like. As you said, its not bad for an open source effort but with some work it could be a _lot_ better.

Would I be correct in assuming there's no Mac version?
Pah I'll stick to Myth then

Yeah, lack of multiplayer is probably the biggest thing this game lacks so far.
There are some people who claim to be working on it:

But anyways you guys at project magma are for the most part gameplay experts. You know what makes good maps and gameplay.
Your expertise with the myth source code and experience in making maps gives you guys a huge design advantage.
Of course the great benefit of working with open-source is that you guys can open up to a much larger community instead of a small niche of hardcore fans.
You could also get in touch with the original programmer(s) of the source and ask them questions if needed.

There's a linux port and it uses opengl, so it shouldn't be a big deal to get mac os x support - plus apples are basically becomming pcs it seems.

That's bullshit. Yeah, they're gonna be able to emulate PCs but that's no excuse to stop supporting the Mac OS. Even the Mac users who have the ability to boot into Windows, or run it in a paid-for emulator won't want to because it makes for a shite user experience. People aren't going to just abandon the Mac OS. so developers shouldn't either.

Is that really an M3 Zerk? I can't recall them having axes. If they actually played Myth, no way they'd pick one without the claymore weapon anyway
Graphics look on a par with Myth III minus the physics engine - Myth III's wasn't as good as Myth II but it did a good job copying it.

Haha, I knew that would get some die hard mac ppl to come out.
The whole project and it's details are pretty much up to programmers like Iron who are able to implement the features so.... you probably need to find out if he's even interested at poking through the source first :-p
