So I recently heard about a program called Crossover for the Mac. (If you're not familiar with it, basically it lets you run windows programs without installing XP). Apparently it runs HL2 very well, and as a hardcore gamer, this has caught my attention. I'm very interested in playing some Windows games on my Mac Book Pro.

But the quesiton is, does it work well? Is it worth it? Or is it just more buggy software trying to emulate windows?

It's based off WINE, which was originally an open source re-implementation of the Windows APIs on Linux (now also Mac OS X).

I haven't used it much personally, but from what I hear, it's not bad for running a supported set of apps (ie HL2, Office, etc... stuff they actively advertise as working well), while the results are mixed for other apps.

So, unless they specifically mention the app, you have no way of knowing if it will run well, or poorly - which may mean totally unusable depending on the app.

I personally just use VMWare Fusion to run a copy Windows in its own sand box when I need it. (Parallels Desktop offers a similar product.)
