Green Berets and Special Forces

I saw some screenshots of the Special Forces plug for Myth II and was struck by how similar it looks to how I _remember_ Green Berets looking. (my memory IS notoriously erratic though)

Anyone know how similar SF (or SF2) is to Green Berets? e.g. similar units, weapons, models, gameplay?

SF2 compared to Green Berets.......hmmmm lets see.

Units look = same ( I used the tanks and some other stuff for ww2 as well)

Units feel and control = Improved 10 fold.

Gameplay = 4 years of tweaking to get it right. You will be impressed. Trust me.

You can do things in SF2 you never thought would be possible with the myth engine but thanks to the code boys some cool stuff can be done now.

On friday you will be able to see for yourself because I plan to release the units and a redo of Willow Creek renamed "the Village" ( deep EH? :P ). Im not going to release all the maps at once but will instead continue a steady stream of maps with a new one to be released every 2-4 weeks. With a 10 map co-op campaign release in October 2008.

So friday keep your eyes on theTain and get ready for good times ahead.

War is upon us and looks to continue for sometime....

SPECIAL FORCES 2

PLUGIN HISTORY:
A few years ago I released a plugin called Special Forces. At the time it was going to be the last thing I ever made for myth. Well this plugin is proof that I can't just let go of my beloved myth. Fear and Loathing (mapmaking for myth) have been a hobby of mine since the day I bought M2:SB so many years ago.

My goal at first was to simply make maps and play them with other people. Well that soon turned into an addiction and found myself spending all my free time making maps for myth. Well as time went on my hobby actually turned into a bit of work. Take Two contacted me and wanted me to do some colormap work for them for a project called Green Berets. Well just as the project started, T2 decided to make some cutbacks and fired the whole GB DEV team, including myself. DOH!!! That dream was over...or was it?

One day sitting on creation HL I started a private chat with cydonian(units) and GHOST(scripting) and I was bitching about how the Green Berets thing fell through. Well, somehow it came up how the 3 of us could take on such a project without much outside help, especially if we were going to get paid to do it. So that night I called Tim Beggs the guy who hired me to work on Green Berets and I told him that I thought Cyd, GHOST and I could make Green Berets by ourselves. "Hmmmmm...", he said " Let me get back to you on that...that seems like an interesting proposal!"

He called me back the next day and I remember I was SO glad to hear these words... "The project is alive again!". WHOOT!!! I hunted down the other guys as quick as I could to tell them the news. It was exciting! We were actually going to make money doing this stuff. WOW! Anyway our excitement was short lived as we soon found out they wanted to release Green Berets in 5 months before the end of the year.

UGH. We hadnt even started. No concept. No story. NOTTA. Well, it sucked but if we were going to do it we couldnt worry about the time limit. We had to get started. And that we did.

The reason I bring this all up is because that deadline SUCKED... It was so hard to meet that we almost didnt finish it.If we had more time it could have been so much better. The final product was good/ok but it wasnt GREAT and it should have been. In my eyes it wasnt finished. It needed so much more but T2 said it was good enough and released it (UNFINISHED!!!!).::cries::

Shortly after its release (and I was paid) I decided I was going to still work on Green Berets in my free time. I took it on as my new hobby. AHHHH relief! I could take my time and do things right. Time went on and I poked and proded at it when I heard there was a group of people working on the code!!! GHOST who did 95% of the scripting for Green Berets happened to know these guys (magma) and told me how to get in touch with them.

So thats when I started hanging out on udog Hl and where I met some of the nicest people Ive ever met online. I showed them my project and they thought it was great. Somewhere along the line I became a magma member and was able to request certain things be added for the 1.4 release. Iron thought some of my ideas where great and added them. The deal was though that I would release SF along side the update. So I did. Even though I really didnt want too. I did. This is where SF2 comes in. SF2 is basically 4 years of me adding/subtracting/tweaking/twiddling/fiddling and TESTING with Special Forces1, Green Berets, and WW2 and all the new stuff being added to 1.5 and 1.6 updates. Ive had alot of help with so many people that have come and gone that I cant even try and name them all. You knwo who you are (i hope) though so I want to thank you all for the help. I hope the final product is worth it.Its been a great experience working on SF2 and I think youll see that shining through when you play it.

ozone,

thanks for the SF/GB history - I really liked Green Berets a lot (despite in general not being a big fan of modern warfare games). My only major complaint was that I wanted more variety in the bad guys - but that's a limitation of historical conversions I think - nothing GB specific. All in all GB was a really good product, so many times over the years I've wished more people had it so I could do some coop and ffas.

Hearing that SF2 is a finely tuned GB+ release, I am now looking forwards to it a lot!

btw, thanks for the hours(days) of fun I've had with GB! Knowing enough of map/unit/plugin making to have a fair idea of what's involved in a project as involved as GB or SF2, I definitely appreciate how much time and effort you've spent making fun things for the rest of us mythers. (and am amazed that 3 of you were able to make GB from scratch in 5 months!)

thanks!

I hope this doesn't disappoint anyone too much but life has a funny way of testing your will sometimes. Well this is one of those times...

Wednesday my wife had an MRI done because she has had a headache for 2 weeks or so. Well they found something. One of her arteries at the base of her brain has an aneurysm. Its small but they want to do surgery anyway. Scary times...

So I just haven been able to focus on the last minute stuff I was going to do as far as Sf2 is concerned. In the realm of things it just isnt THAT important. Know that it is 98% done and will be out as soon as I can find time to do that 2%. I feel bad for not being able to release it today but being with my wife and family are alot more important then myth right now...

peace.

holy crap o3.... prayers out to your wife.

Don't feel bad, this stuff is just play time... a hobby. Your wife is other half and should always be priority number one. No need to apologize for what is right man.

Best wishes to her, and for you as well... as she will probably need to lean on you for a while.

Take care man.

Aye, focus on what you need to do for and with your wife. Definitely top priority. I had a similar situation this past spring/summer, and know exactly what you're going through.

Our thoughts and best wishes are with you both. Here's to her getting well as soon as possible.
