Shoot me for being dense ... cooperative play ...

Friend and I want to go through the single player maps cooperatively. Am having a bear of time figuring out how to get it working. We set up the game over our local network and can both join the game. I was expecting that both of us would have control of the units, but only the player designated as captain appears able to do this.
Am I being denser than usual or did I simply miss something?
Seeking enlightenment,

One guy is designated the Captain automatically, and then needs to pick units to detach units via the detach key ( \ ) to the other players.

you can set this key in your preference. \ is for english keyboard and might be different if you use another keyboard. For your information, the key is located right on the left side of the enter
it's "Ã " for me

Mac (right), and PC (left) have the key positioned at different sides of the keyboard, but generally on most english keyboards it's the same key.

Mine is under delete. Which is what this 'backspace' i hear of is supposed to be called. And above enter. (Ha, my \ is more enlightened than your \ gugusm!)

on my mac keyboard the \ is located on the right side below the delete key and just above the Return key, two keys above the shift.
