New to Myth

Hey guys. I discovered Bungie for the first time when Halo: Combat Evolved was released. Ever since then I've been captivated by their outstanding game development.
Over the past months I've been doing a bit of research of early days of Bungie to see what their older games are like such as Marathon and now Myth. I would like to get some guidance into how the game works and a little background on the game form a player’s point of view.
I’m also looking into going to college for some area of game development. So if there is any game development tools for this game please include links.

You can download a demo of the game here:

You can find a copy of the game on eBay or Amazon for a few dollars. As for the tools, they come with the latest update. But you will need Myth II installed to use them. They are called
Fear and
Loathing. Those are the main two, but there are a few other useful tools.

I think that downloading the demo as Pyro suggested is the best way to get a feel for Myth. Obtaining a copy of Myth II Worlds (which includes Myth II as well as lots of other goodies) should only set you back $10 if you're in the US. Maybe $15-20 if you're in Canada. From there you can update Myth II to the latest Project Magma version and even enjoy the original Myth: TFL campaign.

I'd even suggest springing for Myth: The Total Codex (Which has Myth I and II as well as a bunch of other stuff which you can find online) if you can find it at a reasonable price. Also, for the record, there is really nothing in Worlds that you can't get online (with the exception of the game itself), so plain vanilla Myth II: Soulblighter does the trick too.

And come back here to projectmagma and find the 1.6 update in the Downloads. That's what'll have the recent Fear and Loathing that Pyro mentioned.
Thetain.net (redirects) is a great place to find tons of 3rd party maps, campaigns, and tagsets.
It's a great game. I found out about Bungie when they came out with Pathways into Darkness, just before Marathon. Then there was Marathon. I loved it. But when Myth came out, I realized my affection for Marathon was merely a pre-adolescent crush compared to the love I felt for Myth. Ahh, and I remember waiting for Halo, promised by Bungie for us all, watching the Macworld Keynote where it was demoed for the first time... only to have Microsoft swoop down vulture-like* and kill the whole idea with their self-serving purchase of the good boys at Bungie.
*yes, it was more like a bird of prey, since Bungie was not dying and vultures scavenge, but it was nevertheless very vulture-like. It sucked! And all we ever ended up with was Halo CE, years after it was almost here.

Most Bungie fans know of Aleph One, the opensource Marathon project. The Marathon 1 port starts with a very interesting and anachronistic beginning.

To be fair that turned out to be an incredible deal for Bungie. Their Halo franchise has sold over 20 million copies as of last October.
But I do remember being a heart broken Mac fan at the time and I was very, very bitter to have the one company that really made Mac gaming awesome bought by the competition. Eventually I "cracked," so to speak, and bought an Xbox. Now I have a 360 and I love them.
