Updated Myth Units Offshoot

This is somewhat in response to the "Hi-Res units ambition." thread. But I decided to start a new thread rather than digressing too far from the original topic.
I'm glad that it came up in conversation- because I'm a big fan of the high resolution sprites that are already out there and being used- and it would be stellar to have them all.
But, another thing I would like to bring up- though it may sound far-fetched: Would it be possible to convert the existing M1-M2 files to fully 3-D units rather than 2-D sprites?
I was FINALLY able to get my hands on M3 recently and though the gameplay was a bust, I really enjoyed the feel of an up-to-date Myth style RTS. If only the units behaved exactly as their M2 or even M1 counterparts! Were they supposed to?
In any case, I think that updated units would work well with what I've seen from the new mapmaking capabilities of 1.7- and its just a shame that M3 couldn't recreate the near-perfect balance of its predecessors.
