Stupid Vista (maybe stupid me)

My college required a PC laptop for every student. The PC is running windows Vista Ultimate. I ran the myth installer without a hitch, patched it up, and then tried to run it.

The screen goes black, shrinks resolution and then sort of "flashes" back through resolutions until it reaches the one my monitor is currently set to, and then it just dies and I am reverted back to my desktop ( it doesn't play cinematics, sound, or even get to the first menu). This is with classic mode (not windowed). When I tried windowed, I got no response whatsoever when I clicked the icon.

I have an immense craving to play some myth so someone please help me quickly :D .

I should also probably say that I have used a Mac for my entire life and so I know next to nothing about the operating system or anything I would need to do.

Try to run Windows Modern again and see what your "myth_log.txt" says. It may have info that helps. What resolution is your computer set on? Maybe Myth is having issues trying to start with its default resolution. I suggest trying Windows Modern again since Classic is for older OS's. Is that Myth 2 CD scratched? You could try to copy the "tags" folder from the CD into your Myth II folder and then run the 1.6 update and see how that plays out.

hmmmm

i tried transfering the tags and switching back to windowed mode, but no dice.

here is the myth log, I guess I am missing something that I shouldn't be missing...

Try updating your video card drivers.

Also, I'm curious what your log looks like when trying to use the Classic version.

I checked in with the tech support people on campus and they said my card was "fully updated". When I run it in classic version, there is no change in the myth log, it even retains the "Modern" heading on the top. I'm assuming the problem is that I am missing the 3dfx device (which I should have  ) but so far, I have found no way to get that on my current graphics card.

The 3dfx thing isn't a problem, my myth log says 0 devices for that as well. What specs does your laptop have? Did you try running Myth under compatibility mode or whatever that thing is Vista should have?

Here are the specs, myth should have no problem running on it:

Hardware

Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 processor at 2.5 GHz
(6 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB, 64-bit CPU)
3GB RAM
15.4â€

heh.. a core two duo? Maybe you should look into installing Mac OS X on it.

I have heard there are ways to get Mac OS X running on non Apple Intel computers. Of course technically, you probably could have gone with a MacBook and done the dual boot thing with OS X _and_ Vista - although price would have been much steeper than your Vista laptop I am sure.

hmmm...that's a little too involved for me, as much as I would love to run OS X on my laptop, I've heard around campus that some people tried doing it and it caused fatal errors with their network connections and other things.

The reinstall didn't work, I have tried every possible combination of "Compatibility Mode" options, but none of them will work. As for the CD itself, it is in pristine condition. Everything installs fine, it just bugs out when I try to run it.

I'm going to make a few more attempts, if anyone else can offer any suggestions as to why it won't work, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing that this is probably the main problem (as pointed out by the Myth Log).

Error#1337: Myrd's hypothetical resolution switching failure.

My guess is that my monitor doesn't like being told to switch resolutions and I may just need to change some settings there. (For example, it runs StarCraft in a littlle four inch square in the top left of a completely black screen.) I will see if this helps anything.

Well, I've been trying for about 5 months now, and still no luck. Today, however, I made a little more progress. I ran the first installer (CD) in windows NT Service Pack 5. I then ran the 1.51 updater in XP (SP2) and then the 1.6 in XP(SP2). I am using classic mode, not the modern windowed. I also copied the cut scenes from the CD into the Myth 2 folder. When I try to run the game. I still get the weird resizing screen but this time, at the end, the screen stays black and I get the first note of what (IIRC, it's been so long) is the menu music. After the first "note", the music stops my cursor does the weird spinning blue donut thing, then their is another extremely brief fragment of sound and then it crashes to desktop with no error messages, etc.

In addition to running the program in Service Pack 2, I have all of the options checked such as: 256 colors, 640x480 resolution, disable visual themes, disable desktop composition, disable display scaling on high dpi settings. I have also managed to get task manager open while running myth and was able to set its priority to "high" before the application quit. It was actually after this step that I finally got to where I am now (with the brief fragments of sound). Also, in my NVidia control panel I have disable the following for Myth: Threaded Optimization (some forum suggested it somewhere) and Vertical Sync. I feel that I am so close! I just can't wait any longer! I need to play myth. Any new help anyone can give upon seeing this new information would be greatly appreciated.

One further note: Like another topic on this forum said, I set the priority to high, but as it also said, I have yet been unable to restrict the game to one core. Still attempting that.

Please, do not suggest that I re-install it (unless part of a total guaranteed fix) I can't count the number of times I have already uninstalled and reinstalled it today alone. I am now going to defragment and restart to see if that has any effect.

One more thing: I don't know if this in important or not, but I am able to open and use fear and loathing (as in, when I open a map, the mesh shows up rendered and everything.

Thank you again for any help you can give

You shouldn't need all those compatibility options checked - in fact, some of them may cause Myth to not work correctly (like 256 colors - Myth requires at-least 16-bit color).

It's interesting that the log for the Classic version seems as though everything is OK (not even anything about a crash!).

Also, what is the contents (file names and their sizes in bytes) of your tags folder inside the Myth II folder?

The installer doesn't do a proper check if the files got copied correctly, so if they didn't - then they just end up missing in your Myth install.

Yeah, on a sub-sequent try(s) I shut off all/most of the compatibility options and there was no real change.
