ingame sound cuts out

I have an interesting problem.

Before I say anything: Quad Core Vista 64, Geforce 9500, realtek audio. No sound problems of this kind in any other game, not sure its even a sound problem funnily enough.

So..

The ingame sound cuts out. Not interesting? Ok, only the ingame announcement sounds cut out, along with the messages.

Example: hear flag contested all the time? units distributed? casualties? not me. The text on the bottom doesn't even appear despite these events happening. The 'psst' and 'hey' in chat also goes out too.

And the most amusing thing is about halfway through the game i'll suddenly hear and see "game on" pop up. Needless to say this makes flag rally, terries games unbearable. Any ideas?

PS: I've tried: changing the renderer, turning on and off 3D sound, several compatibility modes. windowed mode on and off.

Is the executable's affinity set to a single core?

Didn't help. Also, it seems alt tabbing can sometimes bring the sound/messages back after they've disappeared.

Have you tried using XP-compatibility mode?

Are you running the Modern build or the Classic build? The PC updater lets you choose which to install. Modern is for Windows 2000 and up unless you have issues with it.

Try the Classic Build executable.

It's an option in the 1.6 updater. You can use the updater to switch between the two.
