TFL no unit info bar

So when I play TFL there isn't any info bar. That is, the bar at the top of the screen with the unit name, kills/veteran markers, and flavor text is either invisible or not there at all.
I've got the 1.5 on Vista SP 2. The game runs fine otherwise but I think you'd agree that knowing which dudes are my veterans is pretty important.
how can I fix this?
