Any chance of seeing Myth on Steam?

I can't remember where the details were that explained what limitations the Magma team was under as far as distributing Myth updates..

With Steam coming to Mac OS X this is the perfect chance to renew and bring new players to the Myth community. Perhaps the company still holding distribution rights could be convinced to sell it through Steam? $5 US should be a pretty good price. Maybe even $10 would manage.

The improvements made by the Magma team and others have been really great and I really think it'd make a nice impact on Steam.

That might actually get some players.

Unfortunately something tells me they would use some older, crappier non magma version. Also, how would they deal with the fact myth is completely self-contained? One person could download it and give it to an infinite number of people.

I like the idea, though.

This has been discussed before, and the point is that magma doesn't have the right to sell myth II.

Well like I said, maybe the people who own the rights could be convinced with a little support from the Magma team/community. It's hard to imagine what scale of support would be required to get them to make it happen.

Magma has practically done all the legwork here. Myth is already fully functional. The binary works on the latest Windows and Mac versions. The fact that Magma has an up-to-date version should actually help the case for releasing it on Steam.

Ooga's point about Myth being self-contained.. Well.. uh.. there's nothing stopping them from pirating it now, either. I think there'd be plenty honest people on Steam that would pay five or ten bucks for it, though.

I have no idea what requirements there are for getting an app up on Steam, but I hate to think it'd be too much beyond what's already in place with the current Myth system.

I think the worry from Magma is that if such a proposal was made, and Take 2 Interactive was actually made aware of how awesome the work Magma's done actually is, is that they would simply take what's been made, call it a day, and use it. In doing so they would take development rights away from Magma so as not to have to share any profit in any shape or form.

That's the general fear I've gathered from the Devs in regards to making Myth downloadable for a cost (in any form, not just on Steam).

It's hard to say what would happen in regards to development rights, but the binary in its current form is pretty solid. The most recent release patched some major problems related to opengl/ATI and I don't personally know of any other bigtime issues with the software.

The team already doesn't get paid for what they do. I'm not saying I don't appreciate and love the improvements that have been made to the engine, but maybe it's "okay" to let the game go now if it means bringing in possibly hundreds more players.

In its current form, all these changes the devs make are only seen by what, maybe 50 people? If they didn't get paid maybe they could find reward in seeing the game regain some popularity once re-released. Doesn't compare to the time and efforts they've put in, but I don't know. As a purely-user standpoint I'm dying to see more players and I just don't see that ever happening unless Myth sees re-release.

Thing is, what if someone finds a bug that allows their units to be invincible? (It's happened before.) And Take 2 has already put a Cease and Desist out? Do we just live with it? I know Take 2 wouldn't provide support.

I would love new players as well, don't get me wrong, I'm just giving reasons for things being the way they are right now.

Take 2 has put a C&D out?

Right now I feel like the benefits out weigh the potential problems. Would love to know more about what the Magma team thinks.

The main problem is Take Two won't even talk to us.

Hi Myrd nice to hear from you. What if we could finally get a conversation going? Would you and the team be willing to work on integrating Steamworks into Myth?

Say we got the talks in place, what would you and the team need/want to seal the deal? Would you want to get paid or would you do it for free?

It wasn't recently, but the "Myth Worlds" collection, and "Green Berets, powered by Myth 2" were both released by Take2.

Depending how much effort it would take (my guess, not too much) and if I agree with the distribution model (e.g. they shouldn't disallow plugins like GameTap did for the brief time they distributed Myth II). I'd love to see more more players playing Myth.

We've recently tried to contact Take2 without any success as usual. I'm not very optimistic about us getting through to them at this point.
