I was wondering, why doesn't magma participate in the google summer of code?
http://socghop.appspot.com/
http://code.google.com/intl/en/soc/
I think it could result in some cool things.

It's only for open source projects (Myth isn't) and only large mentoring organisations (e.g. Linux Foundation) get accepted.

I don't think anyone on the magma team gets payed - thus the updates they make are open source projects (at least they are in my opinion).
The second thing you said isn't true, projects like
http://www.wesnoth.org/ and
http://www.scummvm.org/ and dozens more get accepted. Those aren't 'large mentoring organizations'

Do you know what "open source" means?

Open source means you can use it for free. It also means the code is available for public under the GNU public license?

Myth is not open source as Myrd stated earlier.

Aye you more or less got it KK.
Myth updates are available for free, yes, however the source code for Myth itself is restricted to a core group of users who have signed End User License Agreements binding them to huge penalties if any rules in that agreement are broken. Sharing the code with people that arent signed under that agreement would be breaking the rules.

If any of the Myth games were Open Source the full games would be available for free.

pointing out a significant aspect of open source projects isn't kicking.

Let me explain why I used the word 'open source' anyway.
I just thought that the updates that were made for myth II were open-source, and thus that everybody was allowed to make improvements for the game. But you guys pointed out that only a limited amount of people is permitted to make updates and improvements for the game.
When I saw the summer of code thing, I thought it would be cool if somebody added an extra feature to myth. But he wouldn't be allowed to do so (I realize that now).

All this being said:
The Myth Metaserver code IS open sourced. If someone wanted to edit that to somehow accomdate other older games of the same era, like how Mnet supports all 3 versions of myth as well as Marathon... If it were opened as a metaserver hub for more games, it could be a way to get more people involved in the myth community.
