Zoom Distance

Can someone please explain to me step-by-step how to increase the zoom distance in maps (a feature supposedly available since 1.8.2) ?
The read-me has this to say:
"Maps may now specify an extended zoom level to use. Valid range is between "-5.0" (full extended zoom) and -0.99998 (Myth II's normal max zoomed out level). Set via via a float field at offset 584 in the mesh file header. "
But I don't know what that means, I'm not sure where the mesh file header is and how to edit it.
