the only #'s I have off the top of my head are for magma projects. so I can't really help you there. Just for reference, UTB was unofficially released last saturday, officially released on monday morning, and by monday night, it had about 70 downloads off the web server (potentially more from hotline).
As for how new maps are publicized, that's up to the author and/or their friends. Post news to websites, add it to pmnets list of downloads, upload it to the udog hotline server, or maybe the tain when it's ready.
Is it worth it? Sure if you get something out of the experience.

making a map is fun and interesting, but if your goal is to make a map that will be played and enjoyed by the whole community, you need to devote a LOT of time to make it really awesome. When I make a map, I think i have more fun testing my new units on willow creeek and betatesting than I have playing it after Unless its a full game.

I agree, you have to want to make the map for yourself. You might make something totally fantastic, or you might make total garbage, but the second you worry about making something everyone will like, you're bound to total mediocrity.

And if your plugin doesn't work on PC people will hate you. Man - that was embarrassing.

I've got a series of plugins including Rocket Dorf Fest (RDF) that have had some good download numbers considering the size of the community these days (680 for RDF and about 400 for my ball/flag plugins):
Baak's Downloads (RDF)
Baak's Downloads (Plugins)
I posted news articles throughout the community last November and it has been going as word-of-mouth since then.
I've got RDF 5.1 (some minor enhancements), a series of very fun map mods (we've played almost 400 games on one map), another RDF solo, a whole new game style/mod, several extracted unit conversions that are insanely fun - all coming out over the Summer!
In addition, my ordermate Vinylrake has made a sweet series of ball conversions that will be going public shortly.
(Right now our announcements are located at the top of the OoH Forums - I'm working on having a main OoH News page soonâ„¢)
I did spend quite a bit of time on my maps and plugins, but we have so much dang fun with 'em that it's well worth it. We just broke our 4,000th (!!) Order of H'Pak game a couple weeks back and there's no end in sight.
Visit us if you want to check out more - we've got a simple forum going and much more to come:
