Hey,
I was wondering if there are any plans to make a hi-res units tagset. Specifically, a tagset that replaces normal Myth II units with the hi-res ones found in Frenzy of the Damned and Requiem of the Dead. The units in both plugins really look quite stunning.
Surely it wouldn't be hard? Couldn't someone just make a new tagset that replaces default Myth II units with the awesome hi-res ones?

Hm a good idea. Try and keep Myth looking sharp.:p I like it.

Conversations here in the past have talked about the possibility, usually the conversation seems to get stuck on the fact that Myth games would really look ugly if half the units were low res and half were high res, and no (afaik) has come close to recreating anywhere near an 'entire' set of hi-res replacement bitmaps for the standard set of bungie units.
And "hard" is relative. It's easy to create a unit tagset for the units that someone has already gone to the trouble of creating a hires collection for, but if you want a useable tagset that converts more than a few random units you would have to create a tagset for the units that aren't yet hires by either creating your own 3D models from scratch for all the bungie units and then re-rendering ALL the animations for every single unit and every action that a unit does (attack, taunt, walk, run, cast a spell/throw a bottle/drop a satchel/heal/etc) and build it into a collection (the easy way) OR you have to manually hand edit hundreds of bitmap images for EACH unit you want to fix - trying to clean up the frames one by one to make them look better.

VR is correct, the topic has come up a few times, and there just aren't enough hi-res units to do a tagset that would be anywhere near complete, and creating the missing ones is more work than anyone here is ready to take on.

Alrighty, so I suppose a hi-res tagset isn't happening any time soon. It seems to take a lot of work. I'd do it... but I have no clue how to.
It'd be cool to have a hi-res tagset, but if it is too much trouble to make, I guess we can all make due. The default units don't look that bad.
Just as long as it's a consideration that may come to fruition in the future. It just seems that half the work is already done with the existing units, but perhaps that is not the case. I don't mean to demean the amount of work that goes into these, for I have no concept of how long or little it takes to create a unit like that.
It just seems like a shame to have such visually stunning units used in only two plugins, that's all.

Three actually. And they really don't look that bad next to the unchanged units; I usually forget I'm looking at a mixed set. So I don't see what the problem would be with making a set just from the hi-res units that were already made. If Iron made one, I'm sure people would use it.

Since I like to collect useless trivia, what are the three myth maps use the high res units?

Anything is possible, but unless one of the handful of graphic/myth unit specialists still working on Myth projects gets supermotivated to spend a few weeks working on it I wouldn't hold my breath.
I haven't created a myth unit from scratch (or recreated one) but my guess would it would take anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days to create a decent looking 3D poseable model for a SINGLE unit, a similar amount of time to get the animations looking good, many hours rendering the animations at all the different camera angles, and at least another day+ to do all the importing of the individual frames into amber and color plate tweaking, collection building, testing etc.
I probably left out some steps, but it's not a simple task - which is why there are many, many more maps made than there are new units.

I agree with A-Red. It'd be pretty cool to have the tagset whether it's finished or not, cause I doubt the differences between hi-res and non hi-res units would be that bad. If it was finished, that'd be even cooler, cause you could use amazingly cool hi-res units with just about any co-op or multiplayer map, built-in or otherwise.
If Iron made one, I'm sure people would use it.
As for Iron making it such a tagset, that'd be nice, but I don't wanna seem like a jerk asking him to do stuff for me all the time. He is already remaking the B&G co-op Little Flat Top cause I asked a bunch of questions about it here and on the PlayMyth forums, and I think it'd be really mean of me to request that he do hi-res unit stuff too. It seems like that'd be asking for a bit too much.
I just want the idea to be out there if someone wants to consider it.

You mean "cryptic" as in "After the solo campaign is released there will be a high-res unit set utilizing the new/revamped units used in TFV"?

Yar, I thought we (meaning Iron and the gang really) didn't have the ability to make all the units hi res. Not so much "not the time," but the method that was used was not availible for all the units. Maybe?

It's not so much a 'method' really. As I understand it he took higher resolution bitmaps than the ones originally in Myth, and just used those instead.
I know once someone was hawking around some method that supposedly would take M2 bitmaps and make them bigger + better via some kind of Photoshop trickery, but to me it sounds like bumpkis. You can't create something that isn't there, as far as I know, so enlarging M2 bitmaps would just make mud, wouldn't it?
<<< Too tired.

What are the maps with the High Res units?
Heck, what are the high res units?

I made the zerks and thrall from scratch - also the hi-res myrm seen in Frenzy. Its not impossible to model the missing units, just a lot of work.
