Man i hate polls. Especially those ones that wind up on TV with all the politicians. I think they call 'em elections?

Then you must be in Oz William, cause as far as I know, Australia's the only country that requires you vote by law. It's a very interesting idea, but if you're forced to participate in a democracy by law, is it really still a democracy?

you can choose not to vote in australia, and there are two ways you can go about it: you can not show up on polling day, and likely get a fine of about $110 (unless you have a good excuse); or you can show up at the polling place, get your name marked off and then just not fill in the ballot papers.

i think technically australia's some sort of republic, though, as is the usa.

i think "forced" voting is a good thing, as it means you don't necessarily end up with certain factions being disproportionately motivated to vote (still happens, but if they do it won't necessarily have as pronounced an effect on the whole nation).

I never said it was inherently bad (I don't know where everyone gets the idea that democracy is inherently good in the first place), just that it's unusual, and something that might warrant more thought on my behalf.

Certainly voter turn out is a concern in many countries, although others have great turnouts without resorting the threatening the populace with fines. Fines are certainly a valid means of improving voter turn out, and certainly an effective one, I just wonder if there might be a better alternative.

I was unaware of the option to show up and not fill in ballots, that alleviates the majority of my concerns about such a system, but I still find it interesting. Thanks for sharing that tidbit.

No offense intended but the combination of such a 'grand' title appearing in such a huge sig advertisement for something that hasn't been completed always strikes me as a little funny.
