Well... we never thought this through see but here's how it is.

We have 3 computers on the internet (2 PC's, one Mac) and one Mac that isn't (on account of us not having another blue cable).
When we host on the internet it doesn't seem to work (gives us a -4994 error, even though the router says that Port 3453 is open. I maintain I've done something wrong but can't figure out what it is).

We use a firewire cable... I don't know why actually, it's a pain in the arse. It's fast that's for sure. But as I recall, we need a hub or some such to use an Ethernet cable to connect to each other and we never bothered getting one.
(Another pain in the arse about Firenet is that we're unregistered, and after 30 minutes it pulls the plug on you. So much for Legendary Co-Op!).
Okay I got the models but now I'm too dumb to do anything with 'em

the fact that you cant filter ports might be because you are unregistered?

Filtering ports ain't got nothing to do with our router (meaning that it does have something to do with our router)

Ok, new plan. Just for kicks, is it possible for us to connect our two OS 9 macintoshs together with a phone line and/or an ethernet cable?

I remember trying the ethernet thing, but we needed a hub or some such.

You can connect two together using a cross over ethernet cable(which is not the standard cable cable you use when using a hub or switch). Just forget about any kind of phone line thing, this is just asking for trouble and problems.

The easiest thing is probably just to pickup a cheap hub and/or switch from ebay and use standard ethernet cables. This stuff is really cheap these days and you can probably find the equipment in the trash been of any company with a decent sized IT department.

Actaully, you can get a crossover cable at like Radio Shack for far cheaper than you can get a hub and two cables anywhere. If you had newer macs, it wouldnt even need to be a crossover cable! But in the mean time, the crossover is your best bet. I have used that exact setup for myth in the past and it works like a dream.
