Decided to try my hand at this, however since I'm on a PC, seems I cant make the most of it.
1. i will be doing whatever the hell I'm doing on gimp, and from all the stuff I've been reading was from the view of photoshop... does anyone have any experience with this?
2. i have fear, loathing, topaz, tahoe, headedit, anteropc, and jade.
most of these didn't come with readmes, so no clue what half of them do or how to use them...
anything else i need?
any knowledge on how to use the above would be useful
thank you

What are you trying to do?
Gimp works fine for myth tasks. Basically all you need is a program that works w/ indexed images. If you want to create units or w/e though, you will need AMBER. Which is Currently a Mac Only app.
Fear and loathing have decent info that can be found at http://www.projectmagma.net/fear.html and http://www.projectmagma.net/loathing.html.
If I was you though, and you wanted a basic tutorial, I'd head over to Myth Graveyard. It has some great old mapmaking tutorials.
