hEY,

I need help with my performance. Before I ran openGL on my OLD computer mac 533 MHZ G4 and a crappy geforce 2mx with a steady 40 fps.

Now I got 1,7 GHZ laptop, ATI radeon 9600 64 MB and 512 MB ram. Now I get 12 FPS running opengl in 1024 768 (same res as before) How can can an 8 year old game give me such an crappy performance?

OpenGL is only one option, have you tried the others?

You can get really crapping performance by turning open unneed OpenGL options in the Display control panel(Talking Windows here not OS X). Forcing settings like 8x FSAA will make any game run much slower. Also it's unlikely you have a true ATI 9600 in a laptop, you would have mobility ATI version. But still any laptop of recent vintage should perform well about 12 FPS even with a really low end graphics card. I'll try and post FPS #s from my box later today.

Another suggestion nobody has mentioned yet is possibly giving myth more ram to run on. It has a required amount, but you can always boost the memory you actually allocate to the app when it's running. I usually boost mine up 32 mbs or so...But then again, I always get 300-600 fps so w/e.

(BTW, Myth doesn't ever actually render anything faster than 30 fps, despite what the read out says. So if you're getting less than 30, where you usually get more, you should be concerned, otherwise, play myth and have fun :D

Actually Myth will render more then 30fps. But the content of the frames changes at 30fps. So when you go above 30fps you are just getting some identically renderer frames. Which is fine since the human eye can't detect changes faster then 24fps or so.

Edit:
Also the memory settings only apply to versions running under Classic MacOS.

Ok on my AMD Athlon 3200+ & plain ATI Radeon 9600 I get around 50 fps in OpenGl & 110 fps in Direct3d in 1024x768 on the opening screen of willow creek with the units moving into place. More importantly I don't get any kind of lag and what not.

In general, Nvidia cards are better at OpenGL and ATI at Direct3D (this is true for all games, not just Myth - but is very visible in Myth). Drivers also sometimes have issues.

Also, you want to have a recent card, because cards like Geforce2MX and below will still have low FPS depending on what map you're playing, since these cards are like 5 years older or more.

If you have an NVIDIA Geforce 4, 5XXX, 6XXX, or newer, then it should run Myth II perfectly under OpenGL (just make sure you don't have 2x, 4x, or 8x AA enabled in your card's prefs). If you have an ATI Radeon 8500+, then it should run Myth II perfectly under Direct3D (but also make sure there's no crazy AA settings turned on in your cards prefs).

Is it possible for a pc user to have myth II use more memory?

Just ignore the more memory thing. It has no meaning outside of the Classic MacOS.

My setup:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
2gb RAM
Nvidia GeForce 7900 GT (driver version 84.25)

I cannot get more than 30 fps in the game, and many times my frame rate goes down to 10 fps if not less. Has anybody figured out a way to fix this? What's even more strange is how my FPS is maxed at 30, even though I tried the latest beta patch and removed any max FPS limit.

Check any settings in your NVIDIA control panel / tray item. Remove any override settings there.
