New Forum System

Post by StoneCold »

Welcome to the new Project Magma forums! This forum has been redesigned along with the design change that will be coming of ProjectMagma.net.

All posts on or before July 20th have been rolled over to the new system, and all of your accounts as well. You should have no problems logging in and using the new features throughout the forum.

Please note, we are aware that some cosmetic issue's are still present. One to note is that text on the brown background on some pages is still black. Also, links for pages are still blue. Please be aware we are working on this and we appreciate your patience as we work on these problems.

If you experience any other problems or feel that you should let us know about a certain cosmetic problem, you may post it here. We will review ALL problems posted.

Thanks again guys!

Improved security is good, but these new colors are just ... yuck.

Any chance of getting the old colorscheme back?

It is based on the getmyth.com website that GholsBane did. Everyone seemed to have liked that and GB had done a very nice CSS sheet so we used it.

If you can find or make another skin for this board that would go well with the getmyth.com site feel free to post it here.

Re-appropriated CSS is hardly ever fun. What worked for one site won't necessarily work for another. It's not a good fit here, much better to stick with the default theme until someone can skin this properly. You keep expectations down that way :)

It seems guys you are suffering from the Registering bots (they register and do nothing, but the websites linked in their profile tend to advertise things like mobile phone pictures or porn websites).

Just something you may want to check up on.

The only solution I could work out on the OoH site was to remove signatures (where they put ads if they ever post, and which serve imo to take up massive amounts of real estate) and to occasionally go through the db of users and remove users with ridiculous name/www combinations who have never or rarely posted.

Not sure if phpBB3 will have a solution to this or if someone has come up with a phpBB2 module to solve the problem. I wonder how they get past the visual confirmation during registration unless it's an actual person doing it then or they've cracked the code (which should be uncrackable imo).

No Doob, it's definitely a part of the registration process for later versions of phpBB (I referred to it as visual confirmation). This is what makes me wonder if it isn't bots registering but spammers themselves (i.e. in person).

A bit trickier to keel these off at registration...

All I've come up with so far is manually sifting through the db once a month and deleting the obvious ones. The signature line was the only remaining way they were using to do ads because they could post anything as a reply to any topic - even though it sounded like they were part of a different conversation - and their signature with webpage/links would appear. It was obvious to everyone when it happened, and they were purged within a couple days, but annoying nonetheless.

Making sure users can't send email via the forums is also wise (the default I believe), but really I don't even like the idea of those folks sending PM's - not that I know of any who have.

I also made all Usergroups such that you couldn't list all users in usergroups from the board - something I don't think would ever really be used anyway - just because I'm a bit paranoid and wouldn't want someone sifting through the data a bit easier (not that the email addy's are available, but again you could build a list of the links and send emails to everyone, etc.).

I had thought at one point of making a "no brainer quiz" for registration that said something like: "What are Wights filled with?", etc. ;)
