OS 10.2 problem

Post by Mr. Fang »

I have an oldreallyold Mac G3 Powerbook, meaning that the best OS that I can install is 10.2.8. Anyway, I just updated from my old 9.2 system to 10.2, and now Myth will not run. When I try to start the OS X version, the icon bounces up and down in my dock for a few seconds, then goes still without the program starting. On the other hand, if I try to run it in Classic, an error message appears telling me that another instance of Myth II, Fear, or Loathing is running, and that I need to quit; this is plainly false because none of those programs appear in Process Viewer. Am I being ignorant, doing something wrong, or what?

Thanks in advance.

What version of Myth II are you trying? 1.5.1 or the 1.6 beta?

Oh sorry, should have provided that info. I discovered the problem as I was trying 1.6, but I realized that it wouldn't work with 1.5.1 either afterwards. 1.5.1 gives me the same "Another instance of Myth II" etc. message.

in your local folder see if there is a file called Myth2
if there is, delete it.

you probably know about this, but there's a free utility called xpostfacto from otherworldcomputing that will let you install OS 10.4 on Mac laptops as old as the Wallstreet and Lombard series (1998 & 1999).

I did know that, but a copy of 10.2 cost me $15 on eBay compared to the $130 it would cost for 10.4. And money's not really flowing freely into my pockets, if you know what I mean. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Post the contents of your myth log file here from both 1.5.1 & 1.6 when starting up without using classic. Also rename your local folder for the moment to make sure that's not an issue.

Not a problem, that's exactly why I am running OS 10.2.8 as well. Just thought it worth a mention since it sounded like you thought you were restricted to 10.2.8 because of your hardware or Apple's unwillingness to support their own 'legacy' hardware.

Well, no need to post the log now. The local folder was causing weird problems, so I just deleted its contents entirely. In addition, for whatever reason, the new OS installation marked all of my plugins, tags, and other Myth files as not belonging to my computer. To solve this, I just copied the entire folder. Now Myth runs fine in 1.5.1 or 1.6, though I still can't get the "OS X only" version to do anything but bob up and down in my dock.

Speaking of "legacy hardware", I see that I can no longer use my RAVE 128 vfx card to run Myth. Is this because Apple removed support for the RAVE cards in OS X, as I think I heard somewhere? I believe that this is the case, and it pisses me off. Maybe I should just cave in and finally get a new computer.

Thanks for your help, everyone.

Corrrect, there is no RAVE support in OS X. And if memory serves me correct OpenGL isn't supported on your video card either. Which just leaves you with software mode only. The OS X only version needs your system to be in 32bit graphics in order to run, which I'll guess is maybe the issue. But eitherway the OS X only version is built to run only on 10.3 & 10.4. Though I don't think any APIs are used yet that aren't in 10.2 but in the future some will be used that aren't in 10.2.
