OMG I am dumb and need help

Post by CheezeFist »

For whatever stupid reason I have decided to try to mess around with mapmaking. Thus I could use a hand.

Can anyone point me to some directions from which to begin to learn just what the hell I am doing?

Thus far I have fired up loathing and begun to screw around with the training map. I understand, I think, what I am looking at but already have a few questions:

First when I try to add a unit I can only add the one on top of the list, how do I select another unit to add? When I double click it just opens a options box. Unless I delete that unit from the top I am stuck with only that unit.

Next, I deleted all the sound effect makers, how I get rid of the training voice over and scripting?

Like I said I thought I would mess around with just the training map for now to try to see just how all this crazy shit works.

BTW I'm on a MAC if that makes any difference.

Maybe use the dropdown function of the dropdown box that appears when you click on the unit symbol (the little warrior) in your Tool window? :P If this doesnt work, I cant help you, but I have never heard of such a bug.
When you want to add new units to that dropdown box or remove units you have to double click on the unit symbol in the Tool window and use the option box you already mentioned.
This works similar for all other objects on the map (projectiles, scenery, sounds, models etc).

Click on the flag symbol in your Tool window and the scripting window will pop up. Delete all map actions in there (you can select multiple actions at once) and the scripting of the map is gone. The voice is also scripted and will therefore be gone too.
Btw, sound effect markers are only resonsible for environment sounds like birds etc, and have usually nothing to do with scripted sounds like the training map guy talking.

Oh, and good luck and have fun! 8)

Im not sure you can select more then one map action on a mac. If you cant, try importing an empty txt file (mesh/import map action).
do it.

Someone should make a Fear and Lothing tutorial video. Sometimes the explanations don't make sense unless you see it first hand. Then you feel like an idiot when you figure it out. :(

I challange you to find motivation to figure out Loathing, and consequently Fear in turn, and create a basic solo mission. I hope you take me up on the challange, and if you do, Good Luck!

I think a lot of the tutorials assume some level of knowledge which I agree 100% that the beginning mapmaker definitely won't have, even if the person is an experienced player - but there are at least a couple of guides that are really good for beginners (I know from experience).

HealWithSteel's "Mapmaking for Newbies" is an EXCELLENT guide for beginners. If you take the time to walk through it and create a map you will learn a TON and will know all the basics. Heck it even covers things I couldn't find explained in other tutorials like common (weird) water depth issues.

Though not quite as in-depth, Cydonian's Myth II Mapmapmaking Tutorial is also very good.

For colormapping how-to's you really can't beat Clem's Colormapping walkthrough (I would recommend downloading the zip file). then once you have the basics down read the colormap tipturial.

and for scripting there are always Are's Scripting Guides
