I think it's a mistake to think that MNet is meant to fill ANY shoes. It just... IS. And if MNet goes the way of the 5.25" floppy, Magma will prolly resurrect BattleWatch =>:-]

By a fond farewell I am refering to the slow wasting away of myth, which is hastened by certain unwelcome events.

Just looking at some events past and current.
I like myth, however that doesn't change some evidence which shows the slow decline.
Evidence = low player numbers
Evidence = repeated server attacks
Evidence = dropping volunteer capacity to deal with some of these difficulties
Evidence = for pay gaming site beginning to host myth (which actually may be counter productive since it seems inferior to playmyth)

However, there is of course
Evidence = people still are creating maps
Evidence = tcp/ip still available
Evidence = there remains a hard core of players who likely will perserve
Evidence = some newer web sites dedicated to myth

BTW I never said mariusnet was "meant" to replace playmyth, it is, howver, the predominant alternative.
It's current status doesn't match playmyth's (no disrespect to mariusnet), however, that could change depending on volunteer capacity and interest.

Anyway I hope playmyth does continue in some way at the level Blades has managed to maintain it. Myth and Playmyth have been interwoven over the last few years and certainly playmyth going down, if it does, does not bode well for myth inclined people.

I've played this since oct 97 and against that back ground, losing the playmyth server/site, if that happens, is a "sea change" for what remains of this gaming community.

Maybe not. I hope I am wrong. But I wouldn't be surprised given some of the difficulties emerging that "miff" might just slip almost entirely under the waves.

Only time will tell.

If you are talking technical aspects perhaps there is no difference.
However, playmyth is where Myth has lived basically for a while now.

So perhaps I am mistaken.
Do people think Marius will take up the slack if playmyth bites the dust?

wondering....

oh come on guys
the last we need is pesimistic thoughts of what could come

even if it diminishes

the ones who care will still be around
nothing is achieved by thinking negatively

Not only is there no difference, Mariusnet has all kinds of stats features that PMnet lacks. Ranked coop, and all the goodies like that.

Without a doubt, Mariusnet will pickup the slack if playmyth eats it. It is more than capable of handling the load.

Basically, there is no net loss to the Community. Yes, it sucks a ton to lose THE community hub like that. But we do have a backup. And what matters is that we have a place to play that meets a couple of basic requirements (which it does).

Yeah, technically there may be no difference but A) it's always a drag to lose such a site/server like PlayMyth that's been SUCH an integral part of the community for so long and B) even if I always play on a single server it's nice to know there's a second one around in case of emergency.

For the record....

For the record....

Technologically....

Mariusnet will more than be able to handle the load.
It will shortly (next few days) be moving to a true datacenter, on a dedicated server with managed power, backups, mirrored drives and phat redundant OC-192 pipes.

Staffing wise...

I'll be around more than I have been, but I will also be looking at/for others to help with normal 'BNA' type server admin work, though I suspect there is a drastically reduced need for that these days with the shrinking of the community.

All that said, yes it does suck to have the community lose something that is has been a staple of the games' existence... but that's also only an IF it shuts down. No need to get the panties in a bunch over something that hasn't happened. ;)

"Nothing is achieved by thinking negatively" is such negative thinking.

Well then perhaps we'll just have to find someone to start a new metaserver as a back up eh?

Between the downloadable Mariusnet app and the freely available Bungie 'Spaghetti' code, it shouldn't take long.
