Overhead map drawing color

Talk about anything here.

Do you think the color for drawing on the overhead map should be changed to orange, to make it look different from enemy units?

Overhead map drawing color

Post by Myrd »

So, it has been suggested that the color to draw on the overhead map should be changed from red to orange, to make it easier to tell the difference between the lines and enemy units.

Thoughts?

At what point does that become a problem? There aren't any red maps, but what about maps like Venice and Desert? Is the OJ still visible there?

I would have thought yellow would be a better choice, but I am sure there are perfectly valid reasons why yellow would be bad.

Yeah yellow is the same as the overhead trapezoid.

I don't think it needs to be changed.

Seems like a good idea to change it from red. It's definitely harder to pick out enemy splotches from pencil splotches at times.

I voted to change it to orange, but it doesn't have to be orange. I just voted for a new color, really.

I think purple would be better - a bright purple.

what about an algorithm, that determines the average colour of the map, and chooses something highly contrasting? ;)

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been thinking that it should be different for years now. This thread is brilliant.

If you change it, people might bitch a lot about the new cooler, but almost anything would be better than red.

Green would be aweful because of maps like grave and creep.
Yellow might suck for maps like desert and venice.
Blue might be bad for drowned empire...

I think light purple would be the best choice.

Edit: Or maybe it's possible to give people a choice of what colour they want? Choice is always good :).

How about make a palette of colors that you can cycle through?
Same goes for enemy/friendly units.

I'm colorblind between green/white and can't see my units on the overhead map on snow maps.

If I could toggle through different colors I'd be happy with it.
Something simple, like just 3-5 different colors max.

That, or make your own unit's dots larger while your teammates are normal sized.

I like cycled colors better*

Actually that idea seems most feasible.

I think some kind of textured effect like brittle charcoal would be best. Something that looks like you're using the extinguished end of a burnt out torch. Very much "in the theme of the game". :)

No - seriously, light/bright purple would probably be nice, but ultimately having the ability to change the colors yourself somewhere would be best. A very simple/basic palette to use for drawing/enemies/friendlies/yourself/camera/whatever. That way those who bitch can simply use the default colors (unchanged) and the rest of us can customize it however we please. I for one can't see the blue dots of comrades on most maps and would prefer to make them a diff color.

Also micro bitmaps of the units themselves - in action - would be great. That way I could view the entire battle as it unfolds on the overhead map alone... J/K! :)
