How to get rid of my Firewall

Post by neo123 »

I have a Linksys WRT55AG. I think m2s port is 3453 and I have to open that up right? How exactly do I do that? I've been trying port forwarding but its not working. I have Norton set to permit all for m2, but still no go for hosting. Theres also a thing that says "Block Anonymous Internet Requests" for the router in the firewall section and its enabled but I dunno what it does. Nothing else in the fw section though.

1) check your IP adress
run > cmd, so you get the dos prompt, then type ipconfig
IP Address: 192.168.40.105 or something will show, remember the last part

2) log on to your router (just in brower go to http://192.168.40.1/)
go to "applications and gaming" and fill in 3453 for start and ending IP, protocol "both", "ip address" is the one you found in part 1) and check the "enable"

thats how i do it on my linksys, different one then yours but should be about same

I tried all that.

Start Port: 3453
End: Port: 3453

Protocol, I checked both tcp/udp and then put my ip address.

I know its the router because I can host when my comp is just connected to the modem. Anyone know how to fix it?

If this is windows, remove norton firewall, make sure windows firewall is disabled as well. Good software anti-virus and anti-spy are all you need when using the router you have with NAT enabled and software firewalls could still be blocking your ports even when those say they are allowing the ports or if the software shows it is disabled. Unchecking block anonymous requests just means you have made your router pingable "seen" from the internet. I reccommend leaving that blocked especailly after you fix the port issue for many reasons.

the other option you have is to DMZ the computer you are going to use myth on and leave your norton firewall or windows firewall on that computer, but this is not the best way.

I tried hosting today without the router (directly connected to the cable modem with norton permitting all for m2) and it worked fine. I went to the support site for linksys and found

(editted out) http://linksys.com

or you can just type in answer id 392. I was thinking about trying updating the firmware and then putting in 3453 as the port. Any ideas? I'm on a PC. Are there any other ports besides 3453 that need to be enabled?

Norton creates a different network when you connect through your router and when you connect direct to your modem. That could explain why this isnt working for you through your router. Are you 100% sure that you have absolutely no ports blocked on the network norton created when you connected to your router? Software firewalls cause all kinds of issues including the one you are experiencing now. Try this, boot into "safe mode with networking" and see if it works through your router.

Ok I tried it in safe mode with networking, but its still not working. Does my IP need to be static for it to work?

you dont need a static service from your provider, but when port forwarding you need to set a static private on your computer OUTSIDE of your dhcp pool and forward those ports to that particular IP.

If I get rid of norton are there other security things like anti-virus/spyware/firewall you'd recommend ? Still doesnt seem to be working, I think I may update the firmware tonight.

If you really need a software firewall on your pc, Comodo is one of the best. For antivirus, AVG.

Both are free & very good at what they do, and both are _way_ better than Norton.
