Myth I 1.5 TFL Questions on OSX 10.3.9

Post by d0 »

Hi (and thanks in advance),

I'm returning to Myth after several years away (with my son).

After applying the 1.5 update:

I'm getting German language in some preference sections; anyway to change language?

I'm also getting an error file generated, but no noticeable problems in play.

I'm wondering if there's a fix somewhere.

Also, we're trying to do some LAN multiplayer games, but seems clunky. I see AppleTalk is disabled in 1.5, but is the IP join my only option? I'm on a Airport network, w/ ABS acting as DHCP server distributing local IPs , so a game started on one machine can only joined by that local address?

Thanks again,

P.S. The version I have was originally purchased in Korea, but seems to be a normal english language version.

For help debugging your errors, post the contents of the log file in your Myth II folder (think it's called something obvious like "Myth.log").

As for LAN games, IP _is_ your only option, but if you have access to a router with multiple IPs you should have the option of playing online on the Mariusnet game server (related website at: mariusnet.com).

note: Before I read the installation note and just dragged and dropped the new Myth 1.5 file I didn't have the mariusnet link. You have to rename a couple of folders to make it all work correctly.

good luck! (and welcome back)

Thanks,

I'll post the code tonight; any thoughts on the German language issue? Can't be an error, and only partially in Deutsch.

Is there any advantage to playing on Mariusnet as opposed to just locally?

Other than the obvious - that Marius lets you find/play with other myth players who aren't in the same room as you - if you are just wanting to play with a handful of people over a LAN mariusnet doesn't give you much advantage - though the server lobby structure does give you a place to meet and talk if someone gets bumped out of a game. When you are using IP there's no 'lobby' where people can talk outside of a game or where you can go if you lose your connection for any reason and when you play via IP there's no way to tell when a currently being played game is going to end. When you play on mariusnet you can see how much time is left in a game. Probably more differences, but the place to hang out between games or meet before a game starts and knowing when games are going to end is probably the most useful feature of mariusnet even in a LAN setting - unless you really are all physically in the same room so can just talk in real-time via voice - then you wouldn't need the lobby or the 'time remaining' features of the server.

He was probably originally sold a pirated version. Only the German version of the game was in German and that wouldn't have been officially distributed in Asia.

Error message from Myth.log file (after applying 1.5 update):

2007-11-20 09:47:07
Myth: TFL Build 264 running under MacOS 1039 ----------------------------------------------
Error: File system General in tag_files.c, line #2879: Unable to open a file to check if it is a tag file (is tagedit or extractor open?) Err: -43
Closing Myth.

Again, no probs running, and this is generated at quit.

That's very strange. Which messages exactly are you seeing in German?

Here's a screen grab of the preferences: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcxxqfc5_21gmpwr8

Again, only appears with the 1.5 modifications.

This text is contained in the file "tags.gor" in the "tags" directory. The 1.5 update does not modify this file - so the cause of your errors must be elsewhere.

Either something in your local folder is overriding the data in your existings "tags.gor" file, or your "tags.gor" file has German text in it.

You are correct. Went into the tags.gor file on the install CD and all the German language stuff is there. So perhaps the pirated/doctored theory is correct. But why not everything in German (only about 20%).

Still doesn't make sense why it doesn't appear in OS9.2.2 (for which it was designed) but does in OSX.

Does the error message have anything to do with anything?

Should I just ignore it all and play?

The error message doesn't give enough information to figure out which file Myth can't open, so it's hard to say. I suggest to not worry about it, unless you encounter further problems.
