Computer restarts after Myth games

Post by Anthson »

No idea why, but it's happening more than 50 percent of the time, now. Myth will start and run just fine, but the moment the game restarts in single player or multiplayer mode, my computer decides to restart with it. When Windows starts again, I have a "has recovered from a serious error" message. I tried updating my Radeon 9800 pro with a new driver and that hasn't solved the issue. I've tried multiple graphics modes and each one has the crashing problem.

Short of hardware failure, could there be anything else causing the problem?

Yes. This sounds like a problem a friend of mine had with another game. He couldn't play for long before the computer would restart. This is just a guess since it could be something else but perhaps your computer is overheating. With my friend's computer, we just moved it away from the area that it couldn't get much air circulation. It got the job done. So move your comp so it gets more in flow of air, or get a fan and face it to the back of your comp. If this solved the problem consider investing a few dollars for a case fan if you don't already have one. At least remove any build up dust that might be covering the vents of your case and computer parts.

There is no point in getting a case fan if the problem is a loose heatsink though. Sometimes the heatsinks come loose on video cards too.

Case fan vibrations encourage hard drive failure btw.

The power supply unit might be faulty or overloaded.

I wasn't saying get a jet engine next to the case but a cheap case fan... I got one for like 10 dollars. It help keep my two hard drives from overheating. Safe to say a cooler hard drive with slight vibrations is better than a hot hard drive with no vibrations that might break any second.

My computer used to overheat a lot and cause really flaky things to happen like you describe. But now I have my computer in a modified chest-style freezer and it runs great.

If it were an overheating issue, I'm not sure the undesirable reboots would not be happening at predictable intervals. The computer does not restart itself after 5 minutes of Myth. I can play the same map for an hour if I want, but the moment I hit "restart game" or end a netgame, the computer restarts. It has to be something other than an overheating issue. I've checked my fans and they all work.

Well if you already had a case fan then it probably isn't an overheating issue. But for the record just because the issue happens at predictable times doesn't mean those aren't times where the computer is doing more than usual and therefore overheat or over something. Faulty RAM maybe? Corrupt files?

If it _only_ happens when you restart a Myth game, but not at any regularly timed interval I'd guess corrupt Myth install. It's too long ago for me to remember the details, but I am pretty sure there was some plug/conversion I used to play a few years back that started doing that consistently - e.g. everytime I played Myth with THAT plugin active at end-game it would crash to desktop. I think after a while it 'spread' so any Myth game I played would bomb to desktop. I _think_ the way I got around it was to do a new/clean install of Myth II. But I have 10+ installs of Myth on machine so that might just be my universal solution to all Myth related problems.

I tried a clean install of Myth using the full screen mode instead of the windowed mode and I'm still getting crashes each time I exit a game. I do a lot of Photoshop work and other stuff on my computer and so far none of those programs have given me issues. It seems to be just Myth. Should I try going back to 1.5.1?

Well, I went a long while without crashing and I think I've found the source of the problem. Myth seems to work fine when there are no plugins attached. WWII Titans' unit conversion plugin seems to cause crashes even mid-game.
