7th Dwarf tips and techniques

Post by Anthson »

I'm of the opinion that The Seventh Dwarf is probably as close to a Myth masterpiece as anyone has come, but the damn game perplexes me on a number of levels (particularly those above timid). I've recently discovered you can drop inventory items, swapping special abilities back and forth between units, which helps. Any other fans of the plugin out there have some tips for better play?

FYI Seventh Dwarf was the winner of the Power of 10 map-making contest hosted by Project Magma. Download it if you don't got it!

Wait wasn't that hosted by Onyx Warlords, and didn't it not win?

Still a blast to play though.

Indeed, it was hosted by the Onyx Warlords and it didn't win. If the maps were judged by how fun and potential it had, 7th Dwarf would have clearly won. Instead it was judged in a technical stand point and how complete it was.

I thought it won! It should have. I didn't like any of the other ones in the collection. Zeph, if you guys are redoing it, can I rewrite all the text and etc? I'm a writer by profession, so it'd be super cool to lend my talents.

I don't have anything against 7th dwarf, but are you saying it wasn't done at the end of the contest? If so, how can you complain about an unfinished map not winning the contest?

Sorry, but If the map wasn't finished at the end of the contest (which had already been extended by a month or two from the original end date) I don't see anyway you can complain about 7th dorf not winning. Maybe if it was a contest for unfinished maps (which I would love, I have several of those) but not for actually completed maps.

There was a criteria made and how many points per section decided before the maps were submitted. There were reasons for why things went the way they did.

I couldn't tell that it wasn't complete. I've run through it lots and completed it once with some friends in co-op and I never noticed anything incomplete about it. Sure things could be touched up, but that'd be nitpicky.

The version released in the Power of Ten Map pack was further worked on before it was released to the public. The version played by the judges was significantly more WIP.

i think the version we sent to Power of Ten had no ending, we thought no judge would be able to get to the end :P

Heh, I guess that would qualify as "incomplete". :)

btw, I _like_ 7th Dorf a lot. I just need to find some people to play with so I can get past that first hallway. Of course reading the hints helped a lot. The first few hours I played I figured I'd just hang out in the hallway and wait to go to the portal room till everything was dead. doh!
