The one that got away?

Post by William Wallet »

You mapmakin' types ever have a map that seemed like a great idea but you had to face up to the reality that it simply wasn't worth doing, or wasn't interesting enough to pursue?

Meh..
After that mess that was the Freedom II campaign, I swore off mapmaking for a long long while. Da Cid and I convinced each other in 2006 to make 'one last map' with the understanding that he'd take on more of the work than in Freedom (which was basically my baby).

We had tons of discussions about it, and it really was sounding like an awesome concept, but in the end we never even got past the tweaking of units. Not even as far along as scripting! Ha!! And it was only one level!!!

I still have niggling regrets that we didn't finish this plug-in, because we'd sort of agreed that this'd be a last effort ditch to make one that wasn't aimed at kiddies (like with Freedom). We were finally going to pull out at least one of the stops and make something respectable....

Ah well. *raises glass to Myth Mapmaking, that old hobby I won't return to*.

I'm willing to go ahead and lay the entire blame on Cid's shoulders. Either him or Shatner.

Hey, I LIKED Freedom II!! There was a point 2/3 of the way in where the solo levels switched in difficulty from "dang, I could have won that IF I'd just done X instead of Y" to "OMG How am I EVER going to win this level?" but still a lot of fun.

I'm doing Legendary films for both Freedom I and II, and I gotta say there must've been times where I was on acid, getting those levels together.

Don't get me wrong, it's all very close to my heart and I do love the campaigns, but I mean.... yikes!! There's some crazy/bizarre stuff in there.
To this day I don't know what I was doing with the *instantlyexplodingsatchels*.

I will admit that when I realized why all my dorfs died suddenly while laying a satchel trap I sent a few choice epithets your way, but in general it's a very fun campaign.

One of the factors that stopped me from continuing the project was that there were problems with the colourmap (visible edges of some of the textures I used). I was going to correct this but the .psd was on a DVD.... a CORRUPTED DVD. (I will never buy that brand again, MTV I think it was. The whole spindle was virtually useless).

Does the map look.... familiar?

:) I dunno, I thought I was clever at the time by reusing a Bungie mesh. The transition itself wasn't all that difficult, there was just some honing I wanted to do, and unfortunately it would involve a lot more work without the .psd.

I've been ruminating about this a bit lately and I'm not surprised that the project got shit-canned...
As well as making a map out of Rabican and The Watcher's last tussle, I was going to try and tie it in with a story Cid and I were writing about the fall of Stöng. At the time I was going through heaps of ideas and doodling sketches of what sort of artwork might go into the plugin.
As it stands, they're somewhat cute drawings, but they wouldn't hold up against the Bungie stuff!

The combination of story, artwork, and plugin would've been decent if we'd completed it, but we made one fatal flaw : announcing it in our forum signatures as 'coming soon'.

I would hope that wasn't a significant factor in whether to finish the project or not - if that WERE the criteria the community used we'd be an awful lot poorer in terms of fun maps and plugins - not many in the community can meet those standards, and nice cut/prescenes don't automatically translate to a fun map.

I wouldn't say the artwork was a deciding factor.. considering the drawings I did for Freedom (using a somewhat broken original 1998 iMac mouse and Photoshop 3.0) I reckon that the stuff I was drawing for this turkey was at least a small improvement. Hehe...
But anyhow, just thought I'd share those. For a few years there I couldn't stop myself from doodling Myth stuff.

I'm not sure how this works.... I put a 'Coming Soon' on it and it gets canned.
I say 'pity we never finished this' and it starts getting work done on it again.
