ThornCastle and Blood Makes the Grass Grow - missing?
ThornCastle and Blood Makes the Grass Grow - missing?
(I posted this in General Discussion to get attention from the original map posters)
A couple more potential "Tain crash casualties" I've stumbled across:
* ThornCastle
* Blood Makes the Grass Grow
I'm wondering a couple of things as I ran across these:
(1) Is there a way for those currently managing The Tain to make a list of all entries that are X days old where the download linked file is missing?
(2) For those cases where the original authors are not responding to re-upload, can we put a process in place whereby players could upload the original zips to a udogs upload folder by way of a backup. This way if the original authors don't respond (let's say within 60 days or something) the uploaded zip could be put in its place (with a little bit of double-checking to be sure it's valid)? Maybe have an upload-only folder for this?
(3) Any chance of building a backup of The Tain every once in awhile (mb every 3 months) and putting it on a DVD or DVD's?

I know I have bmtgg as I've been playing it on and off these past few weeks. It's kinda addicting like solitaire. I *think* I have thorncastle too.
there's a url with a list of missing files. i must have it lying around _somewhere_Baak wrote: (1) Is there a way for those currently managing The Tain to make a list of all entries that are X days old where the download linked file is missing?
something like that is in place within hl. I am sure someone who knows the details will see your note and give you the details. I know I have the info - I just can't locate it right now.Baak wrote:(2) For those cases where the original authors are not responding to re-upload, can we put a process in place whereby players could upload the original zips to a udogs upload folder by way of a backup. Read the forums more baak!
All of these things are already in place:
http://tain.totalcodex.net/MissingPlugins.txt
Upload to: "Tain Repop Uploads", it's in the top directory for files.
If you have it please upload it! This is a community rescue effort. VR already did quite a bit I think...
Anyway, the catch with backups: the tain is bigger than allowed for any of the backups the host offers (nice of them to tell us this after our data was lost and they told us we had backups, wait no we dont, several times). I believe mouse has since implemented our own backup system (which I don't know the details of, but it undoubtedly involves the word "tar"). So we should be good in the future Thanks for help repopulating!

Is there a way to FTP this stuff instead of using HL? HL Client doesn't remember the last folder you uploaded from on a PC, which means you have to re-drill for every dang one... You can PM me for FTP stuff if it's possible (crosses fingers).
I'd much prefer to take the list of missing plugin zips/sits, search against my archive, copy them all to a single folder, and upload everything I have that matches (I seem to have several).
If not I'll see if I can stuff them in the default HL folder (which is the downloads folder - ugh) - it also seems like HL is sloooooow for uploads and has a habit of cutting me off before the file is finished (think this might be an XPpro/FW thing).

Didn't have as many as I initially thought, but I'm in the process of slowly (and tediously) uploading to the HL Tain Redo folder the following:
- ADT-FullAuto.zip
- Ambience.zip
- ASoldiersPeevev1.0.zip
- BaaksAnywhereMultiplayerPak_v19_to_v115_OmniPatch.zip
- ChalkHills-Redux.zip
- Chaos-source-129.zip
- Dorfball_VeniceStadiuv1.zip
- ForgeofTharsis2hellmav1.0.zip
- GETTYSBURGCOOPv1.0.zip
- lockpak.sit
- OmniPatch0.2-Apply.sit
- Sengoku.zip
- SleepyValleyv1.1.zip
- TheShowdownv1.0.zip
- TSoTMultiplayerv10.zip
what i found useful when I was uploading a bunch of stuff over several days was just to leave the Hotline client open (coincidently it's called 'FrogBlast'!) and connected at all times so I could put a few files in the queue, leave for a few hours then come back and add a few more.Baak wrote:Is there a way to FTP this stuff instead of using HL? The tedium of actually FINDING the maps on my labryinthian hard drive is what prompted my latest round of 'organizing' my myth stuff.
For some reason the HL Client for the PC has not behaved for me for quite a while. It almost seems to be after I installed XPpro a couple of years ago and/or after getting behind a router and/or a different software f/w.
It doesn't seem like any of these things should be a problem, but basically I can't queue a lot of stuff because it either drops me (connection refused from HL Server - sometimes in the middle of things!), or says "Only 4 connections allowed" (or something similar) even sometimes when I'm only uploading/download one file, or seemingly random error messages like "File Already Exists" during upload (after trying again it will upload/overwrite it properly).
It appears to be a handshake issue of some kind, and the symptoms appear almost random.
I also see this behavior (and have for the past couple of years): Every "Task" will say "Finishing" or have "0:00" for time left (on d/l's), but will not clear off the Task window until the next task is initiated. Never used to do this. I often d/l a small file just to be sure the queue is clear. Annoying. Again it feels like a handshake issue.
So... basically I have to baby the dang connection and do them one at a time and confirm that they actually transferred, etc. Can't queue anything and have to expect to be dropped at any moment. Etc.
It s00ks.
The good news is I managed to get all of the files on the above list uploaded.

Icky... I guess it is an aging protocol...with aging clients etc. There are a few other clients around, namely a few in java that seem to work better on certain systems. vivahx.com has a decent list, though I think a lot of the links are dead, but at least you can get some names etc....
Thanks for uploading things Baak!

np - only wish I had more of those that are missing.
It just seems weird to me that the same HL client I've used forever started behaving in such a quirky way seemingly after switching to XPpro and/or being behind the router. Oh well, maybe I'll fiddle with the fw settings and see if it makes any difference.
Only thing I couldn't upload via HL was the only one that was mine (!), namely the "Anywhere Multiplayer 0.9 to 0.15 Omnipatch", possibly because the zip name is HUGE. I uploaded this one via the standard Edit for the plugin on The Tain.

ok. what's up with the repop folder? I've tried to upload 3 files and they were all rejected with an 'uh no' error message. Does the folder only accept files that have file names that match the missing files EXACTLY?
If so, that kida s00ks because I have a lot of stuff the tain is missing with apparently slightly different archive names (eg. .sit instead of .zip, or in my youth I changed the zip name so it would sort 'properly' in my filing scheme - I expanded some archive file names so I would know that 'brawl_v1.2.1.sit' was really "The_Barroom_Brawl_v1.2.1.sit".) I hope it's not this, because I am way too lazy to manually change the file names.

Alas, VR, I think you're doomed to rename, since I imagine the db for The Tain is looking for the precise names listed (especially if it's Linux based).
Today I tracked down a couple of HL Client clones for the PC and actually found one that looks just like the original. The only difference is it doesn't have the issues with the Tasks I described above (it's called Underline). Interesting. Another one was pretty neat but didn't have separate windows for Chat and Folders which is - well - lame, and had some quirky config settings.
Aha! I knew something was up!Pyro wrote:Well lately the HL has had some issues. I've gotten disconnected a few times and gotten chat lag. It might be connected to your issues with uploading stuff, Baak and VR.

You kids are on dope. It does no such name matching, its just a regular old upload folder. TZ has to go through manually and match each item to the correct item in the tain database, then manually update the list. Cause he's a trooper like that.
HL itself also seems to be working OK. In particular, our anti-pyro filter. Took weeks to perfect that so that he thought it was just weird connect problems. VR, are you sure you were logged in and everything? If you hop in during the day some time I should be able to double check your account permissions, etc.
