hi all
i have played Myth TFL and I was pretty hopless at it. I liked the game a lot though. I even bought Myth 3 and was still hopeless at it. But they are both great games- I expecially want to try mutiplayer... !
So when i read that Myth had an online multiplayer community -- i came to look it up here. Some questions :-
1) How popular are the multiplayer servers? And is there a game browser in the patched game?
2) Which of the Myth versions, 1 2 or 3 is most popular in multiplayer -- and in general terms -- why?
I'm hoping by getting answers to the above I can decide whether to buy Myth 2....
Guidance on which Myth to buy and how is multiplayer going.?
Re: Guidance on which Myth to buy and how is multiplayer goi
Greetings Mellpin, welcome 'back'!
At present there is really only one multiplayer server running - you can find it (and register for a free account) at http://mariusnet.com.
How popular? Amongst the people who play multiplayer myth, mariusnet is very popular (it's the only place to play Myth online). Amongst the general public? Not very. In general during evening USA hours there are probably 50 or so players online at a time. CAn't speak for other timezones.
Myth II is by far the most popular multiplayer Myth game, it accounts for probably >95% of all recent online games. Why? Probably many reason but most importantly I think because Myth 2 is pretty much the game that Myth 1 was supposed to be. [At the time of Myth 1's release common consumer computer hardware couldn't support some of the effects (like fire and smoke) that Bungie had planned to have in Myth 1], Myth 2 is visually a more appealing game (mostly better graphics), and Bungie gave away free map creation/editing tools when they released the game so there are TONS of multiplayer maps and solo adventures available for the game - everything from WWII to Star Wars to Wild West to Parking Wars to Rocket Dwarves...
Personally, I think Myth 1 had the most immersive, most well written storyline.
Myth 2 is the least frustrating to play (much better user interface for unit/troop movement) and easiest to create maps for, etc.
Myth 3 was the least Myth-like, is almost too dark visually to play, and didn't quite feel finished.
just my opinion of course.
Also, if you want to buy a legal copy of Myth than I congratulate you for doing the right thing. There are a number of places you should be able to find it online used for much less than new retail, which are completely legal. You don't need the unique Bungie bnet userKey because bnet (bungies game server) doesn't exist anymore. All you need is a functioning copy of Myth II (any version will do as you can upgrade using the free patches) and a free account you can get at Mariusnet.

Myth 1 and 2 were made by Bungie, while Myth 3 was made by a different company. Myth 1 and 2 CDs are hybrids, they can be used to install the game on both PC (Windows) and Mac computers. Myth 3 can be installed on PC and Mac but you either get/have one or the other. Myth 2, as VR stated is the most popular of the three. It is a bit more advanced than the first and has tools that have spawned many plugins. Project Magma, who have made the Myth 1 and 2 updates after Bungie's 1.3, have kept Myth compatible on newer operating systems like Windows XP and Mac OSX, fixed bugs, and have added some features.
There is a plugin for Myth 2, called The Fallen Levels. It is the single player levels from Myth TFL (Myth 1). Myth 2 has a "vTFL" which is like a virtual TFL gameplay mode. It lets default levels and any compatible plugin to have behavior like it would in Myth TFL.
