TFL flavour text for The Fallen Levels v2

Post by Soul Reaver »

I just recently downloaded The Fallen Levels v2 plugin for Myth 2 to give it a try. It's pretty awesome, being able to play Myth 1 with the improved features of Myth 2.

But I've noticed that the flavour text for all the 're-used' units are wrong. While Myth:TFL unique units (like the fir'Bolg archers) is as it should be, the re-used units (like Warriors, or Journeymen for example) use the flavour text from Myth 2. This strikes me as a little odd, since the Warriors' flavour text talks about their victory over Balor and things like that.

I'm wondering if it's possible to edit the flavour text for Myth 2 native units (eg, Warriors, Thrall, Berserks) so that the edited flavour text applies to a plugin only, and not to the base Myth II game?

Yes, but then you would need to get everyone you play with to get that same update. For such a big plugin... that looks unlikely.

It wouldn't be problem though - The Fallen Levels v2 is primarily intended as a single-player plugin, right? I wouldn't be playing it with anyone else, so that shouldn't present any kind of problem...

I've already had a look in the Fear editor, and it looks like editing flavour text is a breeze. I can get a hold of all the original Myth: TFL flavour text pretty easily. Problem is, I can't open the plugin file in Fear...

How about it, Project Magma? Maybe we can make another version of this plugin with fixed flavor text as well? The remake is so complete it feels a little strange to miss out this small detail.

If someone could provide me with an editable tags file so I can change the flavor text for affected units (Warriors, Journeymen, Dwarves, Thrall, Soulless, Wights, Ghols etc etc) then I'll gladly make those changes. However, I'd need someone to then receive my 'fixed' tags file so they can make a new plugin out of it, and host it here. Is there any way that might be possible?

Download UnTag from the Tain to disassemble plugins into their tags or to extract just the few you need. Those folders of tags should be in your local folder within your Myth 2 folder. Open Fear and edit those tags you wish to edit. To make a plugin you use Fear.

File... Build Plug-in File.

Then type the name of the plug and check the tags that will be in the plug. Once you build it, you can find it in your plugins folder.

You aren't the first to suggest making an update to the plug. Others have for other reasons related to gameplay and a few for non gameplay.

Thanks for the advice Pyro.

I've been fiddling a bit more with Fear, and now that I'm starting to understand how it works, I think I've thought of another possibility... one that won't interfere with the original 140 Mb file.

I'll just make a flavour text patch plugin! Shoudn't take too long, and to use it, you just enable it along with The Fallen Levels v2. I've tested it out and it seems to at least work in theory so far. I'll post here when I get a chance to try it out a bit more. Let's hope it's all as easy as it looks!

So yea, I had same idea about 2 years ago - but updating The Fallen Levels just for flavors and some minor changes just wouldnt work.

Ive started working on "new" plug - "new" couse it only enchances Iron's The Fallen Levels v2 TFL port ( but it will be a stand alone plugin, not a patch )

It will increase difficulty in TFLevels: add more dark waves (optional in-game music and narrations) - it will also add original TFL flavors ( maybe even unused pregame pictures ) and fix original Bungie bugs.

btw here is TFL flavors tagset

Hah, that TFL flavors tagset plugin is actually exactly what I had in mind. Looks like you beat me to it. Saves me the effort of making it myself though! :P

It'll be interesting to see this new plugin you're working on... particularly the the re-implementation of the unused pregame pictures and bugfixes!

Simple answer - play it with the "TFL Gameplay" option checked. You should do that anyway if you want the true TFL experience.
