keyboard DOA only for M2?

Post by vinylrake »

Anyone have ANY idea why I am suddenly having keyboard-like problems in myth2 but none in other apps? I am typing this with the same keyboard and it is working fine, but I am getting weird results when I fire up Myth II. At first I thought I had a key stuck as I couldn't log onto mnet and the password field was hilited (which happens when you type too many characters) and I was unable to backspace or click and drag and delete the text in the multiplayer login screen pw field. So I tried a different keyboard - same results. then I disconnected the keyboard COMPLETELY and I still get the same symptoms.

When I have the 'multiplayer' login screen visible if I click in any other field (display name, team name, player name) the field fills with 'mmmmmmm' and i can select the text with the mouse but can't delete or backspace to clear the field. Again - this happens whether the keyboard is connected or not. wth?

any suggestions? the only possibility remaining that i can think of is that the mouse is FUBARed and is sending the equivalent of an 'M' keydown signal to the comp, but as I said this only seems to be happening in Myth II, both the keyboard and mouse are working normally in Firefox and worked as expected in a couple of other apps I tried.

btw, this is happening with two different installs of Myth II - the official 1.7 release and the latest public beta of 1.7.1 so it doesn't seem like it could be Myth version specific.

Oh, and I also deleted both my preferences and metaserver files to see if there was something related to them but the problem remained the same. (snow leapard mac universal M2 build - the log doesn't show anything because this is pregame - though M2 does not recognize my keyboard in game either.

help?

ok.... just found out the keyboard is completely unresponsive in another (non-myth) game. :( anyone know if there is some kind of mac OSX gamesystem api for keyboard input that's different than that used by other apps? I am really confused why I can type this fine, but the keyboard doesn't work in Myth or other game(s).

ok. even weirder? I can go into the preferences of the non-Myth game and can press keys to change the controls then start the game and the keyboard doesn't respond.

when i go into Myth II > Preferences > controls, the cursor jumps from field to field filling every field with the letter M. (I've tried prying the TAB key off and poking the tab sensor to see it it's stuck, but it makes no different.)

this is making me crazy. i just pried the tab key off even though i know it's not the tab key because the same thing happens when the keyboard isn;t connected. argh, i just tried it again with the keyboard disconnected and as SOON as I pressed the Controls button I unplugged the mouse and I STILL got the TAB-M effect and it looped through the keyboard assignment fields until I plugged the mouse back in and pressed CANCEL.

I want to punch something. Repeatedly.

Try restarting maybe? I've seen a few others mention keyboard issues on Myth 2 as well. They all were using Snow Leopard. Maybe something in SL is the cause? Maybe the devs could figure something out.

Sounds like the OS thinks you have the M key stuck. FYI: Looping through those controls doesn't happen via Tab, it happens when you press any key to set it.

I had thought that the OS was somehow detecting a depressed M key too, but the fact that I can type in a browser in between aborted attempts to play Myth dissuaded me from that line of thought. If it's at the OS level or there's something wonky with my USB (I did try unplugging both keyboard/mouse from hub and connecting directly to USB port on comp) then I should see that behavior in _all_ applications, not just 2 games.

GDFSnowLeopard. Rebooting fixed the virtual-depressed-M-key problem. Whatever it was.

Thank you for the advice. Now excuse me, I need to go punch Steve Jobs in the face.
