Correct, Myth is essentially single-threaded. Dual core machines may be able to gain a slight advantage because one core could run Myth, and the other core could run all the OS background processes and your other apps. However Myth itself will not run on both cores.

Thanks for all your support! Jon god did the map textures, he's currently the best person in the community (that I know of) for doing them. He makes his own custom ones, and I believe at some point he'll release a pack of textures for others to use. Don't quote me on that, tho :)

And for the people who want less of the new dwarf types, and warlocks, and color guards - turn the game difficulty down to normal, and on most maps that makes the unit selection a lot closer to vanilla myth. Not all maps, but a lot. Especially the team maps.

And the quad core thing was a joke. I am running a pc with a dual 2.0 ghz processor, and a fairly decent graphics card, and the only time I see any slowdown is during FFA or team games where the majority of the units on the map are in the same area duking it out. Even then, its controllable enough to still give orders and dodge incoming lava balls, cast a repel, etc.

A single core would probably be playable, if it's around 2.4 or higher. A 3.0 should do just fine. And a DUAL 3.0 would probably have no lag issues whatsoever.

Speaking of dual 3.0's.... Newegg.com is having a deal on dual core 3.0 ghz processors, for 53 dollars (free shipping!). :)

I may have to pick up one of those.

That's the plan, but I keep growing my texture library, so who knows when... If you need textures, let me know though.

I pity the fool who spends money on those outdated hunks of crap.

I have taken criticism from someone with significant knowledge of the subject (he's been building computers since '93, I was 5 then, so I figure he knows), who insists this was an unnecessarily negative claim. So I will pad my criticism with alternative suggestions.

If you need a new processor, grab a lower end Core 2, or a Phenom. Do not get a pentium or an athlon!

EDIT AGAIN: Then again if you want to squander 53 bucks on a hunk of crap now, I suppose I can't stop you. I would, however, recommend you save up for a bit longer and get something nicer. You will be much better off in the long run.

Dual 3.0 ghz processors are not outdated, and the processor i'm talking about is AMD.

Regardless - it works, and it's better than whatever processor is currently giving people low-framerates using HD units. If you can find a better deal than 53 dollars free shipping for a dual core 3.0 ghz chip, please let me know because i'll have to postpone ordering it from newegg.

Seriously, let me know. I'm about to plonk down a whopping 53 bucks :)

A lot more to processors than clock speed and number of cores.

If you look at that processor by itself in terms of pure performance per dollar, it is very good. Processors which are 2x as powerful cost 4x as much or more ($200+). The ratio seems overwhelming; why pay 4x as much for only 2x the power?

But it's just an illusion. CPUs don't work by themselves. You must include the cost of the whole system. Suppose the system costs $400 without a cpu.

System1: $400 + $50 cpu: $450.
System2: $400 + $200 cpu: $600.

600/450 = 1.33

System 2 is twice as fast* as system 1, for only 33% more. Which one seems like a better deal now?

We're talking about people who don't _need_ a new computer, just a new processor, so the cost of the system (which they already paid for) isnt being factored in.

Anyways, for the purposes they would use it for, the 53 dollar processor is much faster than they're used to, and for very little money. Nobody is suggesting they go out and buy an entirely new system.

Besides, I wouldn't pay 200 dollars for a CPU unless I had money to burn, and most people these days don't. I was appealing to the average joe, not MoneyBags McGee. Just enlightening people who may have the misconception that you have to spend in excess of 150$ for a CPU that meets their needs.

I'd just like to throw in that for Mac users Leopard actually uses a helper thread for OpenGL (not always though, I've yet to find anything that describes the process properly), so running Myth with OpenGL rendering you may get that extra thread which makes it play a little bit nicer on multi-core machines as well.

I'm not sure making Myth support multi-threading better would help that much with hi-res content, as the main issue is loading the textures into VRAM and keeping the ones you need in there at all times. Unless a lot of swapping in and out of memory is occurring then the processor shouldn't matter that much.

Hmmmm I dled demo few days ago but I havent got time to try it till this day...
...damn... I never liked "high res" tfl style units ( mostly because of crappy animation - and somehow low res m2 units were more like stuff we have seen in anime cutscenes ) but this is a whole diffirent story... your new units look and move great. Shame that Myth III developers didnt go that way 9 years ago...
anyways... you have fully "bought" me with this demo... keep up great work guys ::thumb up:: :D

It would be nice for Myth to do that, but I highly doubt anyone is going to do the work.
