Myth saga map [WIP]

Post by firelove »

Hi guys! Long time no see!

I'm back, with a new project! (if it can be called like that...)

After losing all the files of my spanish translation of Myth II, I haven't done anything else related to Myth. Even though I'll re-do the translation (it didn't take me that long), for the time being, it'll have to wait.

But now, I'm working on something else: I'm "re-drawing" the myth map. Yep, the map that shows up at the beggining of every level.
What I'm actually doing is resizing it. The original map is 640 px x 480 px. I can't use that as a wallpaper for my desktop, as my resolution is 1600x900!!

I couldn't find any larger version, so i decided to do it myself. And I wanted to post it here to see what you guys think about it, and maybe give me some opinions.

This is the original resized map. Quite blurry, isn't it?

And this is what I've done so far. Note that "The Province", "Silvermines", "Avon's Grove", "Ash" and "The Plain of Scales" look nicer :P

If you're working from a base of the upsized original it is best to resize it from 640x480 to 1280x960 as that mathematically exactly goes from 1 pixel into 4.

Thanks for the advice. I tested it, and it looks exactly the same :P

The diference is that 960 is 60 pixels larger than my resolution, and I wanted to use the map to make a wallpaper that will be 1600x900. Keeping the height at 900 ensures me that I won't lose any part of the image when I use it on the wallpaper.

Right, but math proves that it ISNT exactly the same, even if to your trained (or untrained) eye, it appears the same.

If your entire goal is to produce a work that can be used on your desktop resolution, great so be it. But that's not going to benefit anyone in regards to using it as a higher resolution hard copy IN the game. If your goal is to use this newer version in game, you should scale up proportionately. If you're simply trying to make yourself a personal desktop, do it the way you're doing it.

I'm doing it for a personal desktop, but that doesn't mean I won't do a scaled resize if someone wants it, to use it in game.

If I might make a suggestion, if you're really ambitious (and REALLY good with photoshop), you might consider reconstructing the map out of the little tactical maps that replaced the illustrations in TFL. These are much higher resolution versions of the map features (mountains, forests, etc.). I learned this a few weeks ago when I was making an entirely new map with the TGL map as a base.

And they weren't just redrawn for the inserts?? That's pretty cool, I have to have a look at that now!
Okay I got the models but now I'm too dumb to do anything with 'em

Here it is. This is for a Dungeons and Dragons game that I'm running.
