i had all of the referenced css files, but there's a couple of css files that are _included_ into each page's html using relative paths which i can't for the life of me find. i tried recreating the css based on looking at the html code and seeing where styles were referenced but that's not one of my stronger skills, so i have the site _usable_ but it's not pretty.

What do you do to backup your web site? We don't need to be doing some pansy ass web scraping of your page some day..

Iso what was completely uncalled for. VR is using his time, bandwidth, and resources to help out the Myth community. Why would you say something like that?

Maybe I missed something, but I didn't take Isolder's post as an insult to VR. It appeared as a simple question about VR's site having a backup so that others don't one day have to scrape a backup out of his whole site.

Going to agree with Godz on this one.

In fact VR, I want to thank you for your work so far. :)

Pyro, thanks for not being stupid. I was as you said asking the simple question about VR's site having a backup so that others don't one day have to scrape a backup out of his whole site.

Scraping is not a preferred method of backing up a web site. Obviously now is a good time to question how such a large of resource as VR's is being mirrored while he's still HERE, rather than wonder 2 years down the road when VR might possibly decide to stop coming around these parts or running his site. Nothing like assuming the worst of me.. you idiots.

Obviously it's our fault for misinterpreting your completely benign judgement-free comments, it couldn't possibly have been your tone or word choice that triggered a reaction.

But for what it's worth, your question is asinine and meaningless. You want to know how my site is backed up in case I decide to stop hosting the site at some point in the future because you don't want to screen scrape it? First off, I doubt very much _you_ are going to be the one screen scraping anything, that kind of work requires actual effort and a willingness to do something to help other people. Second, I am the only one who access to the scripts and database and files behind my site, so it doesn't matter whether I back up my site and download it to CD/DVD every week or rely on my ISP to back up my site, because I am the only one who has access to my backups and my site, YOU don't, so YOU won't be able to get to my backups. without my involvement (or that of my webhosting company) the only way to recreate mything.org would be through what you call 'screen scrapers' (which btw is techically not even the correct term).

Welcome to teh internetz.

Really VR, you felt I was JUDGING you with the comment I made? Look through your post and see who's judging who. You think I have no willingness to help people or put in actual effort. Talk about judging people.. hypocrite. Yeah, it's your fault for misinterpreting. When have you seen anything to give you the idea that I don't put in "effort" or have "willingness" to help? How many posts have you seen where I was talking down on someone? I've seen plenty where you were. In fact, I could scroll up right now..

Obviously I know that you're the one with the access to YOUR webhost YOUR scripts and YOUR database, that's why I brought it up! With you having "ripped" sites yourself since you'd like more accurate terms, I thought you of all people would understand the derogatory reference towards the METHOD not the PEOPLE. Apparently you prefer this shitty method of backing up old Myth web sites that involves having to deal with random files and embedded CSS and generally just "hoping" you got all the files of a web site. Low be it for me to be thinking of properly backing up and preserving one of the now most important Myth web sites out there (So you don't misinterpret, Yes, I'm talking about your site).

Yes, my thoughts were entirely asinine and meaningless. Apparently I'm the one that actually cares about your website not disappearing. From that concern it's becoming you insulting me and my character. I love that.

I care about VR's site not going down as well. However I don't have to insult him to get my desire known.

Okay, man, can we stop the Myth drama for like, 2 weeks? Something has to come up every time we get close.

Isolder, how do you do X? We don't need to be doing some pansy ass Y assuming you do X in a retarded way..

IMO this is a very strange construction, and frankly I can't blame VR for being offended.
