give offerings to the gods of technology

Post by vinylrake »

anyone so inclined, please offer up prayers and supplications to the god(s) of technology. one of my HDs (the one with _all_ my myth content) went to the great burial ground for crappy hardware yesterday. i am currently trying to recover from a full-backup that's a couple of months old, but don't know yet if it's going to work or exactly how much i've lost.

please think good thoughts.

In your case VR, since you are a pack rat, I suggest at LEAST 2 Hard Drives of the same thing. A mirrored RAID would make good sense for you.

well i had timemachine (apple's backup software) backing all my HDs up onto a 2 TB drive, so I did have 2 copies. time machine's basic interface is it shows you your system as it is _today_ you navigate to the folder/drive you want to go 'back in time' on and then you can scroll through the different backups it has. the problem is that since the bad HD won't mount, it's not showing up in Time Machine either. [it seems something has to exist to go back to it's previous state] could just be my unfamiliarity with the program but in a panic i ended up going through the backup HD and finding the folder containing what looks like the most recent full backup of the bad drive and I dragged the folder over to another HD I had enough space on and left it chugging away when i left for work. so, if my system doesn't choke at trying to copy a few hundred thousand files from one HD to another i should have it restored as of early august.

of course the only HD that had enough HD space to copy all my myth crap onto was the scratch drive that is a partition on my backup HD so I need to get another HD so I can get back to having 2 copies of the Myth stuff.

I know of a utility that will revive your HDD.

The utility will work on HDDs provided the HDD still spins.
