The problem is UTBX isnt played that much because nobody wants to be forced to use crappy pathfinding radiuses and all the other stuff that makes vTFL how it is.

Try telling 50 melee units to walk through the narrow canyons on Divide, and time it when they reach a certain point. Then do the same thing without vTFL on, in the m2 version of Great Divide (the original).

Then it becomes obvious why vTFL is unpopular for maps designed for that number of units. I still have fun but thats because I don't have a stick up my ass about vTFL like a lot of reg players do, but I still dislike being forced to play hampered by the antiquated pathfinding. Really annoying.

So is there a reason it's forced to TFL mode?
The cake is a lie.

Because the person who made it wanted it that way.

You could easily make a patch for it. I'd download it.

Well put, but to be totally honest I've never found either flavour of pathfinding to be entirely enjoyable. vTFL might be a pain in scenarios like those you mentioned, but regular M2 pathfinding is too much like a moshpit at a metal festival. At least with vTFL the soldiers still look and behave like people, not antibodies.

But yeah, in tight squeezes the vTFL pathfinding can be pretty untenable.

those mosh pits made melee fights less agonizing. it was much easier to rush with melee in tfl than it is to rush in myth 2. takes more skill. plus you can micro manage much better.

The reason it worked in TFL to begin with was the smaller army numbers. Micro-managing was my absolute favourite part of the game.
