Myth Kickstarter Project
Re: Myth Kickstarter Project
It's 'parked' at godaddy which I think means the domain was purchased/registered but the owner hasn't pointed the domain to a webhosting location yet. Since there's no place for the url to resolve to, it goes to goDaddy.
Re: Myth Kickstarter Project
The myth server code is open source and free and carnage.net is just the NAME, just like marius.net's actual website is mariusnet.com. Our actual website will not be http://www.carnage.net.vinylrake wrote:Don't forget some of that $450K is going to the new myth gameserver/site they are going to be creating and hosting.
Or did you miss the reference to "Carnage.net"? Financial backers get special icons attached to their name when they log onto multiplayer, so they must be creating their own server too. Or maybe they are going to buy mariusnet and hire plataypus and company too?
Re: Myth Kickstarter Project
So when are you going to tell the backers of your project that you don't own any part of the Myth franchise, nor have the authority to create, update, or distribute anything Myth related?
Re: Myth Kickstarter Project
ooga if you truly have any "good-will" here, you would promise in the kickstarter to release the license and all surrounding assets into the public domain once they were obtained. But of course I doubt your intentions are actually that noble here.
You're basically asking for the community to hand you the Myth license (even if Take 2 miraculously agrees, which is doubtful unless you already have a confirmed deal and price with them), but yet posing it as "let's get the license for all of us"! That's some shady stuff :S

It'd be high time that someone did. Those unit models aren't getting any younger and neither am I.

Okay I got the models but now I'm too dumb to do anything with 'em
Re: Myth Kickstarter Project
From Punkuser and other people's comments here on the server in recent topics and my own experience trying to run the bungie server code I can say that yes, the Bungie server code is open source, but while the code to the server itself is open source all that gives you is the gameserver and rooms. The only 'account management' is a text file of accounts you authorize to log on, there is no mechanism for creating or maintaining new accounts, neither is there any player or game statistics tracking.oogaBooga wrote:The myth server code is open source and free and carnage.net is just the NAME, just like marius.net's actual website is mariusnet.com. If you want a fully functional game server you need to create the website/account request-management application, create the database files required for account/order/team management, tie those in to the server code, and create whatever statistics tracking/database/reporting tools needed to support your ranking system. This is the primary reason why (imo) despite several campaigns over the years by people unhappy with mariusnet to create a new server, when people who understand the technologies behind the server realize just how much time and effort is required to create a new fully functioning server they decide mariusnet is good enough.
So 'the server is open source' is not an acceptable answer because it makes you sound like you are asking for almost half a million dollars but don't even know what you actually need to do to succesfully deliver your project. You might have known all this that I explained, but your dismissive answer gave me the impression you didn't know. I would hope with your $450K budget you have budgeted a good sized chunk of time/money for your gameserver, but you need a fair amount of coding modifications, database design, and new code/website to get a gameserver up and running which if you haven't budgeted for is going to be a major stumbling block because without your own gameserver you can't even deliver the rewards you've PROMISED people who invest in your project.

The models are the least interesting part of it frankly... they're of very poor quality and any decent artist could make better ones in no time. It's really the code and surrounding game files that needs to be made open source and free to distribute.William Wallet wrote:Those unit models aren't getting any younger and neither am I.

Oh, no doubt. The lad who was making hi-res'd versions of old units (I can't recall his name at this point, but he made a great looking heron ...) and even folk like IronDuke were making better models.
My (admittedly bizarre) obsession with the Bungie models is a historical, sentimental one lodged somewhere between posterity and an interest in tinkering with old stuff. While I've never been able to make a model worth a shit, messing around with existing ones is endlessly fascinating. And it's not going to go away. It might make me seem like a serial pest, and I'm prepared to wear that, but some day (I have no idea if it will ever happen) I really would like to have a crack at mucking around with them. The worst that anyone can say is no.
As a general postscript - I really would like to see stuff continue to happen with Myth. It's like a dear old friend to me. I wish everyone all the best.
**Ha. Some stuff edited out because I thought I was responding to someone else.

Re: Myth Kickstarter Project
I think that the remaining myth community - what seems like 2-3 dozen people at any one time - is supporting myth's perpetuity by
1. continuing to play myth,
2. creating new maps and units from time to time,
3. hosting servers for chat, file sharing, and gaming,
I think that time has proven that the "Myth Franchise" is not (in this form, or some other) able to attract new players, or - more telling - keep those that had previously enjoyed it.
Ergo, no amount of fund-raising or development - certainly not any marketing plan - is going to breathe new life into the game or the community. I think it's enjoyed a good run, and the wee-small community that lingers is going to enjoy it for as long as mariusnet remains functional.
If there is money to be raised for myth - the legitimate application that I could get behind would be to compensate certain individuals and groups for the time and money they've spent keeping Myth alive as they have. Fortunately, they don't seem to be soliciting, as such - so - I can keep investing my millions in whiskey and whores.

Re: Myth Kickstarter Project
The only thing this proves to me is that the MAGMA community and perhaps some regular players don't believe in or want a new Myth. This community is actually not very significant in terms of who would be primarily funding it. The most funding would come from people who hadnt seen it before, or who had left the community long before magma had even taken over.spa wrote:I think that the remaining myth community - what seems like 2-3 dozen people at any one time - is supporting myth's perpetuity by

Yeah ! the myth friend Godz said with lore !! Gentlemen Group "Myth Kickstarter Project" : we stay animated, but all questions should be answered, because "trust should not be imposed, but acquired". for sample, the Vindicator is RenWood ? or not ? I never talked to him before (well, I have nothing against him). but doubt hangs in the air. if "Myth Kickstarter Project" want my help, they need to be transparent, and not have ambiguities . M.K.P Group, do understand me?

Nonsense; we just don't think you're the ones to do it, for many obvious reasons.oogaBooga wrote: The only thing this proves to me is that the MAGMA community and perhaps some regular players don't believe in or want a new Myth.
Re: Myth Kickstarter Project
I didn't much care for Myth 3 and the only people I'd like to see make a Myth 4 would be the same Bungie team that made Myth 2 and that simply isn't going to happen. Heck, I really wish the franchise had more support and many more fans, especially that still play MP, but this is the last thing that is going to draw in people.
