The myth log doesn't indicate a crash.

Do you have a stuck escape key, perhaps?

You keep saying 1.6, but the log shows you are running 1.7.2. The log gets overwritten each time you load Myth, Fear, or Loathing. So if it crashes, grab the log before loading it again. I don't know what you mean by it doesn't close. Need more info to help.

His post says that versions greater than 1.6 (e.g. 1.7.2) have the problem. So a log from 1.7.2 makes sense.

Hmm well his post title does. It just wasn't clear to me what he meant.

Ok try this, rename your "preferences" folder for this test. Run the 1.8.0 update and see if that helps. That log you just showed up does not show a crash. What exactly are you seeing happen to Myth2? Does it not load a map? Does it go to postgame? Does it crash to desktop? Both of these logs look like normal logs with no crashes.

when i change the preferences folder name to "renamed folder" it creates a new folder with the name "preferences" and the same things as the old one are in it

That's really weird, never seen anything like it before. My first thought would be a stuck ESC key as well but if it's not.. I dunno.

some general longshot questions:
-have you tried restarting the computer?
-have you tried doing a clean install in another folder?
-is your game install on a network drive, USB stick, or something unusual like that?
-are you running the game in compatibility mode? (you shouldn't)
-are you running the game off the CD?
-are you using a non-english keyboard or OS, or other unusual input devices?

Alt-Q can also quit Myth2. Maybe something wrong with the keyboard. Do you have a spare keyboard? Maybe trying this with a different one can narrow down the problem.

-ive tried restarting the computer,
-im not using the cd, i downloaded a copy of the game off miro
that was version 1.6 and that worked but the updates always
made it so that once i opened myth the game would close
(you can even see 'quit' become highlighted as the game closes
1-3 seconds after opening the myth main title screen)
-i have tried installing the game in numerous other folders
but its always that v1.6 works but as soon as i apply
the 1.7 or 1.7.2 or 1.8 update it stops working...
...
Strangely even when i download a whole copy of the game in the version of
1.7.2 or 1.8
the game will close right away after i click myth.exe..(even though i know those copies of the games
worked on other computers)
..
im thinking maybe i need to uninstall the game and reinstall it(how do i not lose my films if i uninstall the game???? how do i uninstall the game???)
not just have a copy of the game in a diffrent folder?
when i unzip the game in a diff folder it never
reinstalls.. i just unzip it and then click myth.exe
and the title screen opens and then immediatly closes
...
-i have a c: drive on my computer
i have a e: drive on my computer
im using windows xp, dell laptop inspiron 1501
-im not using compatibiliy mode
- im using the laptop keyboard, no unusual input devices

all your films are in the 'recordings' folder that's located in your Myth II folder. Make a copy of that folder and move it out of your Myth II folder if you want to make a backup of your films.

I really do suspect there is a problem with your keyboard. It doesn't have to be a stuck key, could simply be something defective with it. Reinstalling the game would not change anything. You might need to replace the keyboard itself.

If a renamed preferences folder did not fix it, reinstalling won't change anything as all it does is place the same files. If your issue was something like a default map or item not working, reinstalling could be the solution if your game files were corrupt. However, it sounds more like something input (keyboard) related. Which means the problem is either the Myth II exe file itself, a change done on it after 1.6, or something on your end like your keyboard.

Try this out. Load up 1.8.0 and quickly press the key combo Alt-P. This should take you to preferences. See if this stops you from quitting Myth. Why this issue does not happen on 1.6.0 you might wonder? Perhaps the input code was tweaked in a following update that allowed this issue to be exposed.

If you are able to get to preferences in time, you could work around this issue in the meantime. Here is a list of main menu commands:

Alt-N = New Game
Alt-G = Multiplayer Game
Alt-C = Saved Games
Alt-T = Tutorial
Alt-F = Saved Films
Alt-P = Preferences
Alt-I = Replay Intro
Alt-Q = Quit

You could also try hooking up a USB keyboard to your laptop and then disabling the onboard one to test if it's the culprit.
