No cutscenes

Hi everybody,

I would like to play The Fallen Levels with the cutscenes.

But they will not play - the voiceover introduction plays, but then the game goes straight into the mission. For instance, I get the narration on Crow's Bridge, but not the video with the soldiers on the bridge.

I have downloaded the videos from The Tain and placed into the cutscenes folder.

When I click Play Intro from the Main Menu, with either TFL or Soulblighter enabled, the game crashes to the desktop.

I am playing on a 2015 MacBook Air with Catalina 10.15.3. The video card is an Intel 6000. Below is the crash log associated with the crash that occurs when I try to play the intro movies.

PS I have been able to get this to work in the past. But that was pre-Catalina and before a recent reinstall of my OS.

I asked you on your reddit post, but have you tried opening the .mov files directly in QuickTime? Some people have apparently has QuickTime issues after upgrading to Catalina. Maybe something like it’s trying to run them in QuickTime 7 (which has no 64 bit version) that’s still installed on your computer from before the upgrade, rather than the new version of QT.

I’m still on High Sierra so can’t test it unfortunately.

Just wanted to chime in to report that I've been having the same or similar issue on a Late 2016 MBP. The cutscenes worked previously, so it is probably related to Catalina. (I'm currently on 10.15.4.)

The QuickTime files open and play just fine if I open them directly from Finder. The error differs a bit depending on if the Replay Intro button is pressed (Abort trap: 6) vs. a cutscene tries to play before a mission (Segmentation fault: 11). Renaming my cutscenes folder to temporarily disable cutscenes entirely prevents the game from segfaulting.

Do you still have QuickTime 7 (32 bit) installed somewhere? I’m wondering whether myth defaults to trying to run cutscenes via QT7 if it finds it (even if the default program in Finder is QTX). Can you try deleting QT7 and see if that fixes it? I’m all out of ideas if not!

Never had QT7 installed on this machine, no. But I do wonder if Myth II is using an old API that has been removed in Catalina.

None of the QuickTime frameworks exist anymore in Catalina. That's the old API that's missing, sadly.

Catalina uses AVFoundation, a movie player framework that came from the iPhone that has its own quirks. It will probably need a bit of work to have that running where QuickTime was very capable.
